5w30 vs 5w40

Hi, since there was some speculation about engine oil usage in Germany, I live in Germany and drive on the Autobahn every day and can report that there is no general rule that Germans typically use engine oils that max out at 30.

Your car should come with clear recommendations what engine oils you can put in and within those choices, you should be safe.  Singapore has a much hotter climate than Germany, so picking an oil with higher viscosity will likely serve you better there.  I would not worry about an oil being too “thick” when looking at the high end of the spectrum—if your oil is a 5w or 10w on the low end, you’re fine. But the higher it can go, the better it is for high performance.  A synthetic oil that covers a 5w60 spectrum will be thin when the engine is cold but still lubricate at high performance and heat; and its longer molecules also keep the engine cleaner.  The only downside is the cost.

Follow your user manual & that's the safest way to do. For high mileage you can probably add another 10 to the number behind

unless there is noticeable oil consumption, i would not use a more viscous engine oil.
