Celicar Turbocharged January 6, 2010 Share January 6, 2010 Not lame. She really applied her mind to the substance of the ad representation and put it to the test. I thought it was interesting that someone went out of her way to do so. It is not so much what happened during the actual incident, but the underlying principle that is called into question. How long more would advertisements be allowed to mislead, without being dismissed as "that's just the way ads are"?

How long more would advertisements be allowed to mislead, without being dismissed as "that's just the way ads are"? It's an interesting experiment she tried. However, after seeing the video of the commercial, it does not explicitly say anywhere that a cake is actually given to all customers on their birthdays. What I implicitly inferred from the commercial was that the OCBC staff were empowered to make decisions to maintain customer goodwill, to even the stage that they may buy a cake on a birthday as a surprise. So... if an actual customer was surprised with a birthday cake at when banking, that is all well and good. But, to actually demand a cake based on an inference from an ad seems a bit presumptuous of the blogger, I would think. Of course, given the situation and opportunity, the OCBC staff should have immediately acted based on their assumed empowerment to make the customer's day, instead of arguing with her in the beginning. That was of course not good PR on the part of the bank.
Ahtong 1st Gear January 6, 2010 Share January 6, 2010 The blogger is being a b1tch. The advertisement is just an advertisement. Everyone with normal IQ knows that and she was just trying to be difficult. At the end of the day, she didn't get a cake from OCBC. She got a cake from the manager. An innocent 3rd part had to fork out money from his own pocket so she could act clever and make a point. Worse still, she even went on to disparge the cake. I suggest she go mountain climbing next time and see if Carlsberg is willing to deliver beer by parachute.

That was of course not good PR on the part of the bank. She demanded it only after it didn't materialise 'surprisingly' or spontaneously so in that respect, she was extending the scenario to ascertain what the bank would do in the event a customer pursued a representation in an ad. TandemAssassin 1st Gear January 6, 2010 Share January 6, 2010 it's people like this that make life interesting and fun. :) anyway, it is all a bit of harmless fun. now to actually broadcast this case widely so we see how the suits in OCBC react. haha. TangoElite 6th Gear January 6, 2010 Share January 6, 2010 if i were to do the experiment, i would actually be very happy to get a cake at all. after everything is over, i would even buy a larger cake to treat the whole branch for putting them through such nonsense or at least pay back the manager who had to fork out for her cake, as it really is OCBC fault and not the branch staff's fault.... i think she is out to hurt OCBC and not really trying to prove a point or and not saving consumers from misleading ads.... it she not out to hurt OCBC than it sounded like she really wanted to have a FOC cake rather than wanting to prove a point
