Christan Turbocharged December 8, 2009 Share December 8, 2009 (edited) here's the story....... AT LEAST 202 countries have received the green light from Fifa to beam June 2010's World Cup football matches in their territories, but not Singapore. Rival telcos SingTel and StarHub, locked in a bidding war, are awaiting world governing body Fifa's decision. When the winner will be announced is not known. Regardless, it is likely the consumer will have to bear the cost of this fight for broadcast rights if they want to catch the live action from South Africa. In 2002, StarHub did not charge its existing customers. Four years later, for the Germany finals, it charged $15.75 extra for existing Sports Group subscribers. Non-sports group subscribers were charged $26.25. The World Cup broadcast rights will be the latest battleground for SingTel and StarHub, who have made aggressive efforts to outdo each other. No more subscribing to SH for sports but for world cup might be willing to pay since once every 4 years Edited December 8, 2009 by Christan

Echo_o Clutched December 8, 2009 Share December 8, 2009 This bidding war is ridiculous. Singapore is just too small to have two service providers.

TangoElite 6th Gear December 8, 2009 Share December 8, 2009 i think singtel will get it again... with singtel now looking to expand their cable tv market share. i think they will put in an astronomical bid again. while starhub is simply too small to compete with the financial might of singtel... Elfenstar 3rd Gear December 8, 2009 Share December 8, 2009 U guys are weird leh. No bidding war = monopoly So I rather they have bidding war and dish out the freebies to sign on. I dun want freebies... I want cheap cheap I think that we should have MDA step in and say no to exclusive contracts here (unless it broadcasting out internationally) and have the pay-TV operators duke it out in price and choice of content. Hokk7777 Neutral Newbie December 8, 2009 Share December 8, 2009 I disagree with people who says "It's the football fans who lose due to the bidding war." To me, if you make me pay what I shouldn't be paying (example, pay to watch sports on TV), then I'm cancelling it. Watching sports on TV should be free. You only pay if you watch sports in a Live Stadium. To me, it's whoever is charging lose. At lease they lose my business.
Foxfire Neutral Newbie December 8, 2009 Share December 8, 2009 Personally, I don't think either Telco wants the rights. There is no value of getting the broadcast rights to the World Cup. You can't bundle the other Telco services, which essentially is the whole point for the BPL exclusively rights. The bidding war is a media speculation. 4 years ago, the rights was by ESPN (ESS), not SH. Then, everyone who has sport group had ESPN, it made sense for ESPN to get the rights (it forced SH to carry it). Notice this time round, ESS did not bid. Whoever wins this will get flak from customers, especially after all the debacle over the BPL rights. And to top off, at least 4 matches would be free to air, as usual. IMO the agency for FIFA doing this is probably undecided because of the low bids, not a bidding war. ↡ Advertisement
