Goldeneye Neutral Newbie December 5, 2009 Share December 5, 2009 More difficult when comes to passing the driving test but in the long run more practical when you go out there and start parking by using the mirrors and your own judgment... On the whole it looks like a good move...

Bicolor 5th Gear December 5, 2009 Share December 5, 2009 Actually should be easier, provided the instructors first teach learners how to be familiar with the turning radius of the car and how it moves when reversing. No need to worry about knocking the stupid poles. The main problem is that a lot of instructors only teach learners the points to turn for the poles so they can pass the test, but that doesn't help much with actual parking. I would like to bet that they will also come up with a system to teach the learners just at what point to turn the wheel, what point to straighten, etc.
Aj2009 Neutral Newbie December 5, 2009 Share December 5, 2009 last time when i first pass my tp test, i could not park without poles in the public carpark, so i always find a lot which is empty at both side and park it in, now roughly 2 years have pass, i just estimate when i am parking, i guess practice makes perfect!! Sdf5725 1st Gear December 5, 2009 Share December 5, 2009 i think without pole is better. first, it is unrealistic to do parking with poles, you will never encounter this in your real driving experience. second, till now, i still dont understand why i need to turn my steering when the pole is at certain position of my windscreen. (i believe when driving hatchback, it should not be the same position) third, by learning without using poles, you have to understand how your car turns, judging from the rear wheels' position and front wheel position, which is really practical and important as i find that some of the experience drivers i encountered till now still dont understand that. Car_guru Neutral Newbie December 6, 2009 Share December 6, 2009 I may be in the minority here, but I think learning to park with poles is quite beneficial if your instructor is able to explain the whole procedure in real-world terms. I use the "pole parking" principles when doing parallel parking, and it helps alot. Of course, I will give some allowance here and there since the pole parking lot is not the same size as an average parking lot. For vertical parking, I'm relying mostly on my own judgment since it is easier to complete compared to parallel parking. I think even without the parking poles, the parking will not be as realistic as the real world. Firstly, the instructors now will just devise another set of "guide points" for the learners to follow. Secondly, you rarely see the circuit parking lots in most car parks. IIRC, the circuit parking lots are surrounded with the kerb on 3 sides, which is quite uncommon to see. I also don't understand why learner drivers are not taught to park on their right hand side. Even the advanced theory book only shows parking on the left. That may be another reason why new drivers take some time to adjust to real world parking.

Weichien Clutched December 6, 2009 Share December 6, 2009 I find parking parallel using a seden easier. Like in driving schools. But when i passed the cars i drive are mpv which i always park until the cars behind have to honk honk due to me taking too much time. The technique they taught isn't very practical if you drive a mpv i feel. Like which point to turn and so on.

Watwheels Supersonic December 6, 2009 Share December 6, 2009 Aiya, whether the poles are there or not, one thing is for certain....that's to practice as much as you can. The difference is the reference points have changed.

I think because we are right hand driving. there are mainly left side parking on the road, if right side, you are parking at the road of opposite direction. of course, this doesnt apply to clamped car park place. I believe by seeing the rear wheels for parking is important. and it is fundamental for the parking be it left side or right side.
Nzy Twincharged December 6, 2009 Share December 6, 2009 I feel that learning with the poles was helpful to me. My instructor did teach me how to visualise where the wheels are and reverse in according to the position of the wheels. After I passed the first vehicle I drove was a honda stream and I did not have any problems parking the car. ↡ Advertisement
