hyundai has just launched its first GDI engine. while mitsubishi launched it in 1996 in the Galant/Legnum series. Apparently this engine tech is much more efficient compared to the normal injection engines. But it has not gained much popularity outside of japan despite being available for 13 years. Could this be due to reduced efficiency and higher emissions results which is due to the higher sulphur content of petrols outside of japan? which other cars on the road now (in singapore) are using GDI engines? any bros here can enlighten me?

GDI for mit car is very unreliable. and expensive to repair. The concept is good. good power as well.

Concept is good in japan only with their high octane petrol and low sulphur fuels. Apparently in all other countries, the exported GDI engines has failed to meet the performance, fuel saving and emission standards that was a norm in japan. Is this a common situation for the other GDI engines from the other brands?

Not true. Lexus had tested Singapore's fuels to be safe before they launched the DI IS250, GS300 (245bhp variants) & LS460.

 

Can sb comment on the reliability of the unjapanese DI engines?

Direct injection mean the petrol goes directly into the combustion chamber. MPI the petrol is injected upstream of the intake valves.

 

Most engine have PCV, to reduce pollution of engine oil vapour into atmosphere. This PCV direct the engine oil vapour into the intake manifold for combustion. Disadvantage of DI engine is the oil vapour will cause the intake valves to be coated with carbon.

so were the N53B25 & N53B30 engines detuned to run on lower ron petrol too? well comparing figures provided by local and japan usage, seems like my vehicle is having a lower fuel efficiency and lower hp/torque figures due to the detune for local petrols.

driving a bmw with detuned engin, still the ultimate driving engine or not hur?

BMW N53 is not sold outside of Europe.

Fuel system cleaner cannot help because fuel is directly injected into combustion chamber, it does not touch upstream of intake valves.

oh i thought alfisti meant that these engines were used in singapore. so are those drivingvehicles with GDI engines locally, do you guys have or know of any reduced engine capabilities compared to the same vehicle overseas (on lower sulphur petrol)

So why hasn't this technology been brought out sooner? Cost, of course, is one issue but it is not the most significant one. Actually, the main problem is the sulphur level in U.S. fuel. Both Mitsubishi and Toyota have been selling vehicles with GDI engines in the Japanese market for years. They can't sell them here because the higher sulphur levels in U.S. fuels would cause the special catalytic converters these engines use to deteriorate too rapidly. Because GDI engines run lean most of the time, a special formulation of catalytic converter is needed to meet tailpipe emission standards. Unfortunately, this type of catalyst has a very low tolerance for sulphur.

 

and how low octane petrol or maybe petrol with more impurities is bad for the high pressure fuel pump and high powered injectors that is a special feature of all GDI engines. So for those driving cars with GDI engines, clean your fuel pump, injectors and throttle body regularly and use the best petrol available (98 and up) for your car.

However, DI consumes less petrol. By the way, it is PORT INJECTION & NOT indirect injection.
