around the world, taxi companies overwhelmingly use toyota, hyundai and mercedes. of course there are other marques too but those 3 are the most prominent. what does that say about reliability and ease of repair/maintenance?

 

the only one i cannot get my head around is VW taxis, which are widely used in china. maybe their VW higher quality as they are made in shanghai

 

on african safaris and desert expeditions, they use Toyota and Mercedes. Land Rover used to be a choice but not anymore.

I still need evident when it regain its market share from Lexus in U S until then i will reconsider owning one. The gear box issue is still not reliable.

You can see that i own a Beemer and i still critize on the brand is because i feedback all my problem in this forum. As you know i have nowhere to complaint. I m just in a very angry mode ,making this forum to spell my unhappyness over BMW. PML i don't blame them, they are also in a difficult position. I not here to spread rumours, there is still a lot of BMW owner out there suffering quietly.

 

i used to own an E46. Only power window spoil, go down already cannot go up. But that's because i had been parking in the sun for too long and i think the heat screwed some of the electronics. The interior was ok, except leather seats became very frayed and crumpled but i suppose it was due to lack of care. Engine and gearbox had no problems!

In the past decade, I have been doing a lot of Outback driving in Australia.

I have to worry a lot about the rental car's mechanical reliability, when I could be in the middle of nowhere (and I really mean, with no soul for miles around) for hours on end.

 

I have generally stuck to two brands only there in Oz, for such trips.

Mercedes Benz and Toyota.

 

But lately, in my last trip to the Tasmanian wilderness (including mud tracks and unmetalled roads ..... not as bad and arid as continental Australia's terrain IMHO), I have used a Hyundai and I can say that it has gained my trust.

 

If anyone were to even offer me a rental Audi, to do those same 'walkabout' trips that I have done, I will reject it without even thinking about it ... quattro notwithstanding.

That's how lowly I view VAG cars' overall reliability. Enuf said.

I am not too sure about that.

I think you own an Audi(or at least a VW) and have come from vagsg.com with a personal vendetta (against BMW).

And in vagsg.com, there are Audi and VW owners suffering there also!

In there, I can sense the anger, resentment and unhappiness of VW and Audi owners over their cars' reliability ... or the lack of it.

Most of the mass market Lexus and Mercedes (and BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Hyundai etc etc) sold in the US are made there in the country itself.

 

Different from the ones we get in Singapore.

So it is really pointless to take their quality survey results and apply it worldwide.

 

Besides, Lexus position themselves differently from BMW and Mercedes in the USA. Lexus, a luxury marque, target the Cadillac and Lincoln market, mostly domestic car buyers thinking of making the switch to foreign. This group of buyers will also look at Acura (Honda) and Infiniti (Nissan) but because of budget constraint may only look at BMWs and Mercs of a lower specification.

 

Lexus were No. 1 in the USA simply because they were value for money and high quality. That's ok in my book, as i like Lexus too but will never buy one. For my money in that price range, why would I want to go the safe route? If i were spending that amount, I want something exciting or at least prestigious.

Well, I have just given the VAG another chance so i'll come back here in 2 years to report on it. i'm still driving it with kid gloves on (it's new) so not really fair tho!

1. I don't think BMW owners are the type to suffer quietly. Like I said before, if I have paid so much for a car and it gives me problems, I will sure make hell of a lot of noise.

I have a friend who used to work in PML service center told me not to buy BMW because it has a lot of problems common to BMW.

The service center does not do repair work, they will diagnose what is the problem and replace the parts.

He was there 5 years ago, not sure if the service center has improved now.

Audi does it for me... It's a mix of both performance and aesthetics. Handling wise may not be as good as BMW but it doesnt really make a significant difference on Singapore roads. Thumps up for Audi's speed & power given entry level engine is only 1.8 cc. Aesthetically, I reckon Audi did particularly well given most of its new models have clean lines, look sleek, executive yet subtlely sporty. I particularly liked the daytime running LED. Another aspect is the image you'd like to associate with the car you drive. Given these, I choose Audi over BMW and no regrets thus far.... A4 owner.

Great driveability for BM, in my opinion, is quite overhyped...

 

I have both (2009) 320i and (2008) A4 in my family, the A4 is better in most areas.

 

If i have to choose one to be with me for the rest of my life, the choice is obvious.

Hey Bro, from my knowledge with the Germans, (As I just came back from Germany for studies) the Germans prefer Audi over all the other existing German automobile brands. They quoted reason being that Audi has developed many well designed models which caters to the current Gen Y German population. Basically those that I actually got their opinions from were students aged ranging from 20 to 30. However, BMW or Audi it's a very subjective choice to make personally. On the better note, Audi produces ddvery good FC cars as compared to BMW. In terms of comparison models (A4 To conand 3 series), Audi has a slightly better pick up then BMW as well. One advice for you, do your homework first before deciding which German make for your purchase.

Talking about brand perception, not quality & performance.....

 

Merc is perceived as a "Tow Kay" and "Ah-Pek" car, still very much so. Even driving their coupe is like a Tow Kay trying to look young & hip, just doesn't seem to work image wise.

 

Audi is up and coming. All these years it has been neglected until the movie Transporter, then the brand becomes cool again. As long as they keep up their marketing efforts, they might just be on par with BM.

 

BMW has always been a babe magnet. Like it or hate it, it's brand image is most successful among the three. No matter how you b*tch about it, whether or not the car is reliable. People are still willing to buy it.

 

So at the end of the day, it's all about the branding.
