Any suggestions on really cheap and good ones? My childhood favourite (for the past 30 years) is the one at Hong Lim Food Centre. $1 (IIRC) per plate of raw fish. Their meat porridge is also nice. Amoy Street Food Centre's one not too bad too.

Nowadays I go Ah Chang. Originally at Tiong Bahru and have a branch now at Sims Avenue and another location i cant remember. $3 for raw fish, and their porridge very smooth. Use claypot and charcoal to cook. [laugh]

Thanks for the replies guys! Will go drive down these days to try them! Best ones are just with oil, ginger, sliced chilli and spring onions! Hate those kinds sold at food courts. So expensive yet devoid of flavours.

I know Katong has one and it only opens in the morning. Next to Esso petrol kiosk that kopi tiam.

Henderson hawker centre at bukit merah view also has 1 yuh sheng very nice and is exactly as u described. Not very expensive 2.50 for smallest plate which is quite a bit already. Dun mix up with the other stall in the wet market which uses a more expensive type of fish but I dont like becoz of the mixture used.

Have been going to the one in Alexandra Village for breakfast whenever I'm in the area for more than 10 years. Will go for the 鱼腩 porridge and the raw fish. The standard of the porridge has dropped slightly but the fish

Agree that it is different, in fact the owners have changed hands at least 3 times since 10 years ago. The porridge store was actually missing for a few years, even the coffee "Tao Chew" Ah Meng has left.

I understand Ah Chang porridge bought over the coffeeshop and runs the drinks store too now. Now I go to tiong bahru market store 163 to have porridge, cheap and good.

Yep, the one next to the bak gut teh. The folks are getting old and frail and I believe they passed most of the cooking to the son. Visiting the store just bring back childhood memories for me more. But I do agree standard has dropped.

Agreed! My sister's all-time favourite is the wanton mee!

I only patronise Hong Lim FC on early morning weekends. Phobia of weekday lunch time crowds!
