Think 205 can't flash in JCV.

Apologies but I was referring to 255.

Try PaPaGo. Taiwan based GPS. Interface wise Garmin is still the killer for usability, though it is from Taiwan too.

PaPaGo uses Garmin maps too, so you will not have update problems/issues considering both MalsingMaps & MalfreeMaps are providing precise updates now & then.

I really doubt that, Papago is proprietry, so is Garmin. So far MFM supports Papago, not MSM.

Sorry, I meant to say they use compatible formats, not maps made by the company.

E.g. PaPaGo is able to use .img files, vice versa for Garmin.

Apologies...

Quite useful according to my usage when I go Msia. My understanding is tat JCV is something tat cannot be "flashed" in but I stand corrected though.

Yups, agree tat JCV is a 'want' rather den a 'need'.

Hmm.. i don't think u are wrong. from my understanding, Junction View images are embedded in the map itself (so not all maps will have Junction View, it depends on the map itself as well) + the function must also be supported by the GPS device in order to have Junction View enabled.

I believe the map detects the GPS device's information from the firmware itself, and will enable Junction View accordingly if it is detected that the firmware belongs to a local set.

So by flashing the firmware of a non-local device with the firmware of a local device, one can enable JCV. [sly]

recommend papago 5800 or garmin nuvi 205

papago 5800 is the better choice, it provides those languages you want, but it's more expensive than 205.

205 is quite cheap and it's easy, but the screen size is super small, it will be quite hard for you uncle to see.

Though i don't use papago, I really doubt that. . Even between the difference Papago version, there's incompatibility, i,e, maps for PApago X2 can't be use on Papago X3.

I hope the bros here don't go out and get a Papago and hope to use a garmin img map on it.

Hi all,

am looking for a GPS for my uncle.

dun need super high end with map of mars, the moon, venus, etc; but something with hokkien/cantonese/japanese multi language would keep the man entertained for a while

Can anyone recommend a place where there is a huge collection of GPS to choose from? Couldn't find any shops like this in Sim Lim Square. Only saw one but they dun have a huge collection.

budget? 200-ish. of course the cheaper the better.

thanx :)

I know one navigation software which may satisfy your request. "speed navi SQ." it is coming to singapore soon.

Try Audio House. See newspapers for offers. <$200 can get a decent Shinco set. Although made in China( And I never liked or trusted China products but got this 1 as the brand is highly recommended by a knowledgable fren) it is very good value for $ & has many launguages to choose from. [thumbsup]

I wouldn't recommend you buying the reconditioned and modified set. Modifying a unit to a localised one in order to be able to use JCV and Lane Assist is illegal and not sanctioned by Garmin. Most ppl who do it on their own risk their set becoming an expensive paperweight if modified wrongly. The other thing is that if one mods his set, within the warranty period, the warranty will be void. Having said that, this set is obviously not done by Garmin themselves. I believe the re-seller did the re-conditioning and mod. Even if he claims that it comes with an warranty, I doubt Garmin will honor the warranty if you send it to them for repair should it breaks down within the warranty period. It pays to pay a little more to get a brand new localised set. I remember recently seeing an advert in the local paper where the localised 255W is going for S$277. Worth buying.
