no algebra...have to draw those bars?

no. of stamp ah gong hv = x

no. of ginnahs = y

x - 6y = 5

x - 8y = -9

2y = 14

y = 7

x = 47

Sigh. Why make things so complicated? No need for bars or even algebra.

Old man wants to give 2 extra stamps to grandchildren but he lacks 9 stamps when he previously had 5 extra stamps. So just take the difference in stamps (5+9) and divide it by the number of extra stamps (2).

Cannot use algebra lah. P3 has not learn yet.

They using model. My daughter is also in P3, also had a hard time understand their math.

Putting it in words, if grandpa gave 2 more stamps to each of his grandchildren, that would leave him with 14 stamps less (9 - (-5)). That gives 14/2 = 7 grandkids. The second part is simple, just work backward.

I believe they use guess and check method for this question.

How to guess and check ? I have never learnt this in school [confused]

Wow .. is this really taught in P3 ? Took me a while to comprehend.

How long is a P3 given to prepare a table like this in an exam ? By the way, this question was taken from Pei Chun primary school's past yr exam.

Thanks ! I will show this to my son tomorrow.

He should be able to understand this, but I doubt he can produce the table in 5 minutes ... maybe in multiple of 5 minutes [:p]

Seems like I would fail my P3 math too. Don't understand any of the explaination. Anyone can explain better? I want to learn too. [sweatdrop]

Ok, let me try again.

Imagine You have 5 dollars left. You want to give all your grandchild 2 dollars extra but that 5 dollars isn't enough; you will need 7 dollars more.

So in order to give your grandchildren 2 dollars more, you will need a total of $14 (5+7). That means you have 7 grandchildren (14/2).

isnt ur (a) method algebra except u kept the x silent?

in algebra, u will get:

y=6x+5

y=8x-9

8x-9=6x+5

8x-6x=5+9

x=(5+9)/(8-6)

same rite? except u shortcut the equation. dats why i still dun understand why people keep saying cannot use algebra when it is still all about algerba.
