Windcloud03 Neutral Newbie October 12, 2009 Share October 12, 2009 If you are in a domain (company network), you can add and remove the users whom you want to access the drive... under sharing -> permissions tab... for authenticated users, you can create a new user account and set a password before adding this user account to your shared drive... Albeniz Turbocharged October 12, 2009 Author Share October 12, 2009 Thanks for the reply. However, there isn't any "permission tab" under sharing.
Albeniz Turbocharged October 12, 2009 Author Share October 12, 2009 To illustrate my situation, I have attached the following screen capture. Under the "Sharing" menu, there is no option for me to introduce a password.

I suspect your HDD file format is FAT32, not NTFS? In order to have a very granular file or folder access control, you need NTFS format. Then only you'll see the Permission tab. With the permission, then you can add you can have the access rights to the folder you shared. There's no such password mechanism in folder sharing... Try use under Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> uncheck "Use simple file sharing (recommended)"... Tjkbeluga is right, there is no password mechanism under file sharing, you need some 3rd party software to do it...password protection is user-based under NT file sharing... Albeniz Turbocharged October 12, 2009 Author Share October 12, 2009 Now, I could see the "permission tab". Thanks. But when I click on it, it shows "This has been shared for administrative purposes. The permission cannot be set." Is there any third party software I could install to incorporate the password protection? BTW: The file system is NTFS. Tjkbeluga 5th Gear October 12, 2009 Share October 12, 2009 (edited) One way you can do is try encrypting the folder. Go to Folder's properties and on the General Tab, click Advanced. If you're on Vista, it will only work on business version and above though.... Mine is Home Premium and it's greyed out... Once your folder is encrypted, you will see your folder is green in colour if I'm not mistaken... Edited October 12, 2009 by Tjkbeluga

BTW: The file system is NTFS. well..from the looks of it, your company IT has control the administrative sections on your network, you probably have to approach your systems guys for any sharing...but try not to share out your entire D$, you probably can create a common share folder for you and your colleagues to dump documents you need to share... you can try Cryptainer (http://www.cryptainer.com/), good free software...
