Hermitage 1st Gear September 27, 2009 Share September 27, 2009 To be a race car driver you must at first be RICH! It takes alot of money just for the training (gotta start from a really young age) and obtaining the racing license. Then you need a cup car (GT3) with which to practice out on track days and stuff which again will cost alot of money! Just imagine the engine/chassis wear & tear parts that will need replacement every so often, tyres will become botak really quickly, crash repairs, upgrades etc...etc... It really is an endless procession of monetary expenditure! And that's only in preparation for the REAL race! In a proper race, you'll need an entire team behind you! Guess who pays their salaries?? Do you think people like M.Schumacher, Hamilton, Alonso & the others come from poor families? Hell No!! Thier parents rich mah! Look at the motorsports scence in Asia as well, look at guys like Tengku Tjan, Alex Yoong and even our very own drifter Ivan Lim, all come from families who are very well-to-do. Can call them 'Ah Sia Kia' if you want, but that's the fact of the matter. That doesn't detract from their talent though, but being talented alone is NOT enough. Which brings me back to my first point, you really really need to be RICH to be a racer!

Benarsenal Turbocharged September 27, 2009 Share September 27, 2009 Two ways. 1) Start young. Very young. Most F1 drivers start around 7 or 8 in karting. But given that you're posting here, I suppose you're not 7 or 8. 2) Have lots of money. And also have a personality that can attract sponsors. The so-called X-Factor. This is the advice our own Melvin Choo the racer gave. Basically, suck up to sponsors lah. Racing is a tough and expensive sport. Sad but true. Which brings me back to my first point, you really really need to be RICH to be a racer! Hey Bro, If I'm not mistaken, Schumacher came from very humble backgrounds. His Dad used to collect spare parts together to build him his first go-kart. So I don't think he bought himself in. It was raw talent that got him noticed. But its really quite sad because I personally know of a driver in Formula BMW who's very talented. His throttle control is close if not as good as the Red Baron himself and his wet weather technique is the best in the racing series. Unfortunately though, he's finding it hard to continue in Formula BMW due to money restraints. Its sad but a lot of good talents go to waste because they couldn't afford to pursue their dreams. And this isn't limited only to racing. Just my two cents... =o)

F1 drivers start driving Go-Karts almost as soon as they can walk. And they 'graduate' into open-wheeled racing by the time they're in their teens. But you can still strive for one make races but you've gotta have lots of moolahs...and if you have a spare US$300k+ lying around, you can always join the Porsche Carrera Cup. They pretty much take in anyone who can afford it.
