Mrlau Clutched September 18, 2009 Share September 18, 2009 I have a colleague who already driving for donkey of years. Once I observed her, always stop beyond the STOP line. Out of curiosity. I ask : "Why you always stop behind the First line, that is the STOP LINE ?" She answer : "HUH ? Is it ? I don't know I need to stop at the FIRST LINE". I though only people don't know the road speed limit, don't know there is a need to signal, there are people don't know where to stop too. ↡ Advertisement
Kxbc Turbocharged September 18, 2009 Share September 18, 2009 (edited) I think it's b'cos you're driving a 3-tonner. My private instructor did not teach me this. My friend who's also from SAF Driving School driving a jeep also did not do this. So do you still do it??? Let's just say I still practise defensive driving and will always stop at stop lines and give way lines to check for traffic. Actually SAF practises rather good driving methodology, esp because it's 3 tonners and it can really be bad for all parties concerned if it is involved in any accident. Btw, I am not driver vocation. Just so happen that I got free driving lessons in SAF. Edited September 18, 2009 by Kxbc

Guest EverestLeasing Neutral Newbie September 18, 2009 Share September 18, 2009 Stopping at stop line when traffic is clear is not called defensive driving. Its called road obstruction. I've not been through any defensive driving but stopping at the Stop Line is still practised by me as there's simply too many 'Ah Tiongs' living in my area thinking that they are made of tougher materials than my car! The 3 tonner's stopping distance is more than 20m (if I recall correctly) even when it is traveling at 50km/hr. On the first day of the course, we had to do emergency brake simulation when they throw a dummy out onto the road we are driving on. My dummy's limbs were all over road many many metres in front of the tonner. There was also training how to brake on wet roads. What we don't have then are the S-roads and biting point test I heard must do for commercial tests. Of course, no parallel parking also.

Redplanet Clutched September 18, 2009 Share September 18, 2009 When you dutifully stop before the stop line at redlights, motorbikes will surge forward in front of you from both sides and block your moving off. I make it a point never to stop at the stop line, but at the 1st pedestrian line instead. See where the motorbikes can stop now, unless they intrude into the pedestrian walkway. I normally let the bikes go first as I have the unlucky experience of a lady-biker losing her balance when attempt to move off. She slammed her body against my passenger window, luckily nothing broken. If she were at my window, I'll probably MARI-KITA!!! B'cos her (.)(.) quite large..... You driving a $80,000 car, yet still want to squeeze the $2,000 motorbike ? So petty meh ? What you gain ? Edited September 18, 2009 by Mrlau
Sosaria Twincharged September 18, 2009 Share September 18, 2009 i was once warned by TP when I slowed down but did not stop completely at the stop line even though road was clear. He said you should stop regardless of traffic condition. Crazy! Yeah, the correct thing to do when you see a SOLID stop line across your path is to STOP, regardless of whether there's traffic or not. If road is clear, then proceed. This is the exam requirement. You can slow down, take a look and continue moving if road is clear only at DASHED "give-way" lines... Just in case somebody dash across the road, very common occurrence now especially with so many foreign workers walking around. Our eyes not 100% perfect. Having a bad day, we can accidentally 'miss' seeing something, especially if our car is still rolling. Sometimes vision also can get obstructed temporarily by bushes, fences, poorly-placed signboards, etc. One 'miss' can cause a lifetime of regret if you accidentally run over someone. Anyway, if someone want to rear-end you at the stop line... you still win hands-down, and get a free rear bumper. I always feel that traffic jams and slow traffic is largely caused by drivers who brake excessively. Driving the highways west to east and back every day leads me to observe that actually traffic jams are more likely caused by poor coordination during lane change or filtering to exit, and then again there are some idiots who insist on never giving way... that's why everybody has to slow down. Guest EverestLeasing Neutral Newbie September 19, 2009 Share September 19, 2009 Bro, I don't want a free rear bumper. Mine is in perfect working condition. Anyway, there are 2 main reasons why no need to brake. 1. Don't be road obstruction, and slow down traffic 2. Don't waste fuel. I read somewhere that you use 6 times more petrol when you stop then move off, compared to not stopping. ↡ Advertisement
