IPhone GPS

if the phone come with a-gps, it has to use the data since the network is always there even you turn off 3G. you need a data plan if you want to do other things on the phone, and the gps won't use up so much data compare to surfing internet (if you buy a iPhone or other wm phone without data plan, the bill will kill you!), locating you is pretty fast, 5-10 sec maybe.

the turn by turn is only good if there is someone sitting beside you to provide the 'voice' like my wife will say 'you miss the right turn just now, idiot!' haahaa....

that one the BEST GPS [laugh][laugh]

to my limited understanding, iPhone uses google map (foc) as the gps system but it come with a-gps that helps to locate you faster. there will be data charge for using it but the usage is very small (dun use it if you are overseas). I am not sure if it can use gps alone i.e. via satelite without incurring data charge. correct me if I am wrong.

as using gps on google map, it is not as good as the dedicated gps dystem that gives you 3-D turn by turn direction, but it is good enough to lead me when I am around the area or plan the trip via the direction given. there are other gps app that can be dl but it cost $$, and I dun really want to answer a call and lost me way as I am talking.....

During my last search for information on phones with GPS capabilities, I was told those AGPS phones must use GPRS. Otherwise it won't even work. Some of the older phones had AGPS and GPS. Can turn off the GPRS but nowadays, esp phones that work on Googlemap, must use GPRS. I think it's a collaboration between the GSM service provider and google. Although this Google map gps thing is free to the user, maybe the GSM service provider is reimbursing Google....

I think your info is wrong. Google map does not reside on ur phone unlike some other map software like Sygic. That's why it has to download from Google Map Server. Anyway, Iphone users are also waiting for Tom Tom map.

Looks like a lot of ppl find information in the wrong forum. Go to HWZ & look for Sygic Mobile Map. This software is $80 & it includes map for Singapore, Malaysia & Indonesia. I don't have it. So, no comment from me.

Lastly, IMHO, ppl who buys Iphone without Data Plan is better off getting a normal phone.

Sygic (using only the Singapore Malaysia version) is quite good. I have tried both Sygic and iGo My Way and they are about the same, accurate and fast. Can customise more things on the Sygic but no really worth $80 to get it.

Hmm ok I may be wrong regarding the commercial arrangements - coz that was my guess hehee.

But using googlemap....will incur gprs data cost. If you are using tom tom map, it means you are also using tom tom software? I don't think it's free right? coz tomtom is commercial....

Bro as you mentioned for the iGo and TomTom, not available for SG must jailbreak. The maps are preloaded when you purchase the software isn't it? Please correct me, can I say the maps for SG, Malaysia, Thailand are available upon downloading the software?

Then why must jailbreak? Is it because the software is only for use in overseas version of the Iphone 3gs? Thanks in advance! [thumbsup]

As long as Data Plan is included, there is no worry about data cost. A lot of iphone users has data plan.

Currently, only Sygic has map for Sg, Msia & Indonesia. It cost $80.

iphone 3gs comes with gps chip embedded in the phone itself, my 3gs is using tomtom & directly connects to gps satellics just like the wm phones with gps. Y i know, coz i had requested my telco to deactivate my data gprs connection, no mms no gprs for me.

yes....u must know where to find....*ahem*

True.

iGo My Way and Sygic has (*ahem*) SG-MAL maps.

Officially Sygic has SG-MAL but I think iGo My Way only *ahem* ones as I cannot find official SG-MAL maps anywhere.

Not really sure about Tom Tom as never search for it.

Hmm. Actually the reason why I looked for a purely GPS phone is because I often travel and I don't want to pay overseas autoroaming GPRS charges....

This is the reason why iPhone couldn't work for me. But good to know that there's 3rd party vendors that can be used on iPhone. But as discussed, lack of maps is an issue too....
