According to reports in The New Paper (I bought a copy to read), "As the light turned green, they started to walk across the pdedestrian crossing in Sengkang. While I'm waiting for the padestrain on the right to cross, there's always those joker would straightaway turn right when oncoming traffic is clear without consideration that padestrain are still crossing. Padestrain crossing that junction please take note, even if the light is green in your favour.. Before that there was another fatal accident a year ago involving padestrain. If they had strictly enforced the speed limits of these vans, the accident might not have happened at all. And on the other hand, LTA regulated and increase the speed limits of commercial vehichles and they started going beyond the acceptable speed limits. Just look at any expressways and you'll see these F&F drivers moving on lane 1. There are talk of implementing speed limiters for so long, yet it's not done. When questioned about the removal of the flashing orange lights on top of vans, the reason given was because of height limits of MSCP. Ok, this is partially acceptable. Why I mentioned partially acceptable is I don't believe all commercial vehicles have only less than 10cm of clearance from the height of the MSCP. If this is the case, why didn't the so called scholars think out of the box to put these flashing lights elsewhere instead of on the roof? The lights could be placed above the side mirrors. That bugger should be put in there till the day he get carried out in a box Hope he'll get nightmares every night and never have the chance to sleep in peace This incident reminds me of a couple of buttholes I encounter every morning when I send my son to school. One bugger driving a Vios and the other a Altis, they like to speed along this road leading to the school and they cut corners without slowing down Almost got into a fight with this guy driving the Altis when he drove dangerously in the carpark just beside the school . . . a typical chow ah beng, so many kids around and he couldn't care less about their safety. Green Man ON, RED light ON; RED MAN On, Green light on. For both left turn and right turn junction. I saw this has been implemented in Hong Kong. When I saw there, never feel so safe to cross the road before. Singapore traffic light system in fact has high risk to cause accident, but LTA is hopeless. This happened at many junctions nowadays. car just turn right without checking pedestrian crossing when there is no on coming traffic. Some cars just brake upon seeing ppl crossing the road and stop in the middle of the road. Although the light is green for turning, the driver has to look out for pedestrians, their speed, etc before turning (behavior depends on driver). This keeps the traffic moving when there are no pedestrians. Some of my friends from Malaysia and HK got a little confused when driving here - "thought green light can move already?". Sosaria Twincharged September 16, 2009 Share September 16, 2009 Not implying anything about this particular accident, as the full details are not clear, but just making a general comment from my own observations these days. I think that parents need to re-stress again and again to their kids when the opportunity arises, the good ol' method of crossing roads... look right, look left, then right again (or was it the other way round?) and if the quick check reveals all is clear, only then start crossing the road. Nowadays I see some kids, even at secondary school level, take just ONE glance at ONE side of the road, then immediately start crossing WITHOUT ever looking up or to the sides again WHILE still on the road! And also just saw a foreign worker do the same mistake just this morning. Worse still, they'll just amble across slowly... forgetting that all the while, the situation is fast changing from the time they took their single glance earlier. Besides parents, I think schools should also put more emphasis on drilling these road safety habits, instead of just focusing solely on curriculum matters... It will help keep more young lives ALIVE. For my personal point of view LTA have a very good traffic system in place. It is so much better then a lots of country. As a road user we are the one to be responsible for our own safety as well as the safety of others. System is dead but us human aren't. No point blaming the system la. Some countries (can't remember which), is red light for all traffice for all 4 direction, and green man turned on. Jman888 Moderator September 16, 2009 Share September 16, 2009 the traffic light at the junction of my house come with safety measure (also near a school): 1. when the traffic light turn green, traffic going straight and turn right both go at the same time (pedestrians stand still). 2. If only traffic light turn green for traffic going straight, the one turning right will remain in red (car stand still). Both give a clear indication that the traffic always has the right to go without have to watch the pedestrians crossing, not too stress compare to the those that need to give way to pedestrians.
