Kianbeng Clutched September 11, 2009 Share September 11, 2009 Mechanic A: Ye$ must overhaul engine. Do top overhaul, do full overhaul. Overhaul gearbox. Mechanic B: No need lah. Just do routine maintenance. ie 100k liao right? Change timing belt. Check all your other belts. Maybe change water pump if together with timing belt. Check if got oil / water leak. Vblaster_w211 2nd Gear September 11, 2009 Share September 11, 2009 Why would you want/need to overhaul or rebuild an engine unless it's faulty, e.g. losing compression, piston wear etc, or if you're looking to enhance its performance? If neither, don't waste $.

Weiming 1st Gear September 12, 2009 Share September 12, 2009 Are you emitting blue smoke from your exhaust? Do you need to constantly top up engine oil when checking the dipstick? Is there a reduction in compression when tested? If not, no need. Also, overhaul can be separated into top and full. I don't think modern cars need to do overhauling unless the vehicle was abused, badly maintained or have really high mileage (200k km and greater). Skunk Clutched September 12, 2009 Share September 12, 2009 my previous car's milegae was 490,000 km or so when i scrapped it, and it had apparently never been overhauled.

I used the last 190K km of it. Mechanic checked and said engine seals are likely to be original, very unlikely to have been overhauled. Engines built in the old days were real tough lol....or maybe because i've almost never travelled faster than 100kmh hehe
Quirky_ster Clutched September 12, 2009 Share September 12, 2009 It depends on what you want from your car and how sensitive your are to it's performance. If it still feel good to you.. don't bother. I did my ride top overhaul at 110K. Was there to witness the job done and I just glad I did.. coz' there's just so much sludge everywhere.. But perhaps it's me that always WOT to 6K rpm.. after that.. the engine feels as good as new. It's not necessary, it depends the kind of driver you are.. Only things i've replaced are wheel bearings, steering rack, battery, tires, and alternator in the 4 years i've owned it. Maybe it lasted so long because i've almost never driven above 100km/h in daily driving, and only twice have i even rammed it...both times at 140km/h in m'sia, trying to overtake logging trucks lol. I guess if u don't stress any engine, it will last pretty long! Edited September 12, 2009 by Skunk
