Nephilim 1st Gear August 4, 2009 Share August 4, 2009 Within the 1st two years of my new car it could usually travel ~540-550 km before my last fuel indicator light blinks. However in recent months when its mileage has surpassed 100k km, I find that it typically starts to blink at ~480 km. Servicing has been done every 10k km. Is this drop of 60-70km per 42 litre tank normal? P.S. Unfortunately this drop in FC also happens to coincide with the period I changed my brand of petrol from Caltex to Shell. Wondering which is the culprit here. ↡ Advertisement

My Mazzie now 104K Km still giving me the same FC as before Most likely might be the switch of petrol brand cos all along i pump SPC 95 .... but when i pump Esso's 95, my Fc dropped by 30-40km on the same driving pattern Edited August 4, 2009 by Mzrmazda3

Leepee 1st Gear August 5, 2009 Share August 5, 2009 I think most Japanese car are designed to operate best at 80-100km/hr due to the national speed limit in various countries.
Russ 1st Gear August 5, 2009 Share August 5, 2009 If FC suddenly increases (if km/l drops, then the consumption increases - you consume more per km) after a high mileage, there is some possibility that your engine may have had sudden damage to it, e.g. piston ring bypassing, valve bypassing, etc. Which means that you cannot get full compression in your cylinders, leading to loss of power from one or more cylinders, therefore some of the fuel goes to waste. Get a compression test done on each cylinder to confirm that your engine is still OK Another possibility is that something in your system, perhaps the auto transmission, or air con compressor, or water pump or alternator or some bearing, either in the drive shaft / transmission or in the fan belt system, has packed up and is providing sudden increased resistance. This could also increase your FC, i.e. you get higher l/km or lower km/l. Some people are less sensitive to increased load. Do you feel a difference when you drive alone or when you carry 2 passengers. If you don't then you are likely to be the type who does not perceive increased load (2 pax = 10-15% more load depending on their weight and the car weight) thus you may not even know that there is a sudden increase in load due to damage. Silver_blade Turbocharged August 5, 2009 Share August 5, 2009 No such problem for my previous cars, all clocked between 110,000km and 170,000km. Have you been replacing fuel filter regularly or have you check your tyre pressure?
Leepee 1st Gear August 5, 2009 Share August 5, 2009 Actually it does not matter how fast I drive in Singapore. I tested on my SSS many times. I can ram and traffic light jack rabbit start every day for one whole week, I can drive smoothly and time the traffic lights for the next week. The difference in fuel consumption is not significant. TS and other folks talking about fuel consumption changes due to distance already travelled (TS using 100,000 km as his benchmark) and you talk about speed. Bo arm key leh.
