Heelntoe 1st Gear August 3, 2009 Share August 3, 2009 Hello, Asking on behalf of a friend. He's driving an EP70 with 1 litre engine, which I assume is the 1E. After helping to jump start a car, his dash is now showing the lighted engine symbol, which we assume is the check engine light. What causes the check engine light to come on? Is it some sensor fault in the car? Cheers ↡ Advertisement

Heelntoe 1st Gear August 3, 2009 Author Share August 3, 2009 Maybe alternator spoil, not charging? That's why battery flat? I meant that he used his car to help jump start another car with flat battery. Currently, no signs that his alternator not charging as he can crank start fine. Also if alternator spoiled, the "charge" or battery light should light up instead. What I wana know that being a carb and mechanical distributor engine, how come it has a check engine light? Kyojin 1st Gear August 3, 2009 Share August 3, 2009 weird, for a carb engine to throw up a check engine light. the whole car is practically mechanical with no electronic controls. what i can think of is that the light is controlled by a fuse (ie if the fuse is short, it throws up the check engine light). and when your friend helped jumpstart another car it caused a surge on his own car and shorted that fuse. that's my hypothesis. just as long as his oil levels, engine temp levels are safe, shouldn't be too much of a worry. best to take it to a mech to have a look through. i wouldn't lose too much sleep over it if there are no changes (noises, poor performance, high FC, burning smells) but i'd be more worried if this in on a newer car with onboard ECUs.
