Though Nissan was in sh!t in the 90s, it has actually quite a lot of engines and expertise in making small cars appealing to Asia-Pacific. This appeals to Renault at that time, who wanted to create a global presence but lack the expertise to do so. So it bought Nissan, restructured it and brought it to profitability. Now it has presence in Europe and Asia, it wanted to establish itself in America. Hence Renault was said to be interested in Chrysler at that time.

But somehow that plan didn't materialise. Seems like Renault is not confident that the chrysler acquisition will work out. Or maybe because of falling sales in Europe, Carlos Ghosn is more concerned on regaining market share in Europe.

Or maybe it has bought a 25% stake in Avtovaz (Russian carmaker) and intends to monopolise Russia automotive market.

That will bring me to another question of where can you still see new Daewoo cars beside in Korea? Since it is now a GM company, they may forbid the Daewoo brand to be used outside of Korea. My guess.

Regards,

Got arr... Vietnam have a lot of Daewoo badged cars

Yes, so along with the process, Renault also bought over Samsung Motors together with Nissan under its wings. Hence, we see Samsung Teana and Samsung Slyphy in Korea too. I told a counterpart that his Nissan Teana is also found in Korea and some countries as Samsung Teana, he refused to believe me [laugh]. He told me how could he have bought a Korea car! Well, thats the power of branding.

Yes, forgotten to mention that a business partner has dealing with a company that supplies auto parts/accessories to GM Vietnam and she did tell me Daewoo cars are still found in Vietnam. Thanks.

Then if the white knight don't come?

Not everyone wants to buy a company that is losing money.

It depends lor, there are buyers that go around buying companies that lose money. Usually, it means cheaper buying price and the companies have market coverage or technological expertise that the buyers don't have. Ssangyong specializes in SUVs so may be there are company that want to tap their SUV making expertise.

Regards,

Who cares about ssangyong's lousy expertise?? lol.

nowadays, people buy Toyota landcruiser or mitsu Pajero if they want a true off-road SUV.. ssangyong really lacks perceived quality. even if their cars are really tokgong, few will be convinced, especially if top gear have proved how indestructable toyota off-roaders are.

Neutral Newbie

Hi guys,

No offence, i'm newbie and my very 1st post in here. Quite sadden to hear abt "fallen motor maker" in korea. I'm a great fan of SUV.

It's feel "love at 1st sight" when i spot the new facelift from Ssangyong Actyon. Very stylish and tall in height.

Looking forward the pricing to be re-adjusted again, although compare with other "branded" SUV,

Hopefully, local dealer wont have any problem of representing Ssangyong brand... keep it going on!!!

even Motorway have 11k discount on Actyon...at 68,888 still expensive la...considering it's using a really really old (since 1993 Mercedes E-class generation) 2.3L in-line 6 150bhp engine...and the specs are really basic...not worth my money leh...

if only they price it around 60k or less...might flood the road...or else who will bother??

plus having sat in the car, it's actually quite small leh...really tight rear seat space and the boot sill is super high...quality is so-so hard plastics everywhere...
