Not sure about the regulation but I did switch to plane mode and use it many times (on SQ, MI, MAS and some china airline so far).

However during take off and landing they will still request you to off your phone (as it also apply to all electronic gadget)....else you can do everything you want on your phone...

Hope my experience helps [flowerface]

Neutral Newbie

No reception, but some people do use it to play games, view documents which they have downloaded, using camera, etc.

I flew to melbourne and back on emirates early june. I was very surprised, but they actually allowed everyone to switch on the mobile phones during the flight, and "resume calls"... assuming you have reception. I guess the sat-enabled phones would be able to, but normal phones would not get a signal so easily.

But the surprising thing was that they actually allowed people to use them.

I am not sure if policies have changed, but at least on Emirates they allowed to do so. I was happily using my phone to play games and read ebooks throughout the 7 hr flights (to and fro Melbourne), and I saw several people making calls on theirs. I made calls from mine when we had touched down in Melbourne, but had not yet disembarked from the flight.

I only know. I always never switch off my phone on the plane even taking off or landing.

Simply, it just consumes too much battery. :D At one point the plane was taking off ;

I was still happily smsing my buddy! :D Well, of course secretly sms la!

i know alot of people think that airlines are just being damn kaisu for asking everyone to turn off their phones and other electronic devices during take of and landing for fear of interferance with the planes devices/equipment. I do think so too, but no one can be 100% sure that it does hold some truth, meaning that handphones and electronic devices may somehow cos some kind of glich to occur on the plane and cos an accident.

so no matter wat, it doesn't take much effort to abide by the rules and be kiasu for that couple of secs to swith off ur phone, kiasu or not, real or not i think let's not take any risk when lives are involved

What's main difference between plane mode and normal mode?

plane mode (or flight mode, to use the actual term) means that you cannot receive or make calls, or send or receive SMS, BUT the phone is still on, allowing you to access the other non-transmitting/receiving functions - eg. calculator, games, reading, etc.

Not only calling and smsing are disabled in flight mode. All wireless functions are disabled in fact. That includes Wifi and whatever wireless stuff there is on the phones. Maybe bluethooth too (not sure).

The effects of handphone interference with airplane instruments are blown out of proportion.

Some Asian airlines after landing also don't allow passengers to turn ON their phones.

If the pilots can't park or taxi the plane to the gate when on the ground, still need to depend on cockpit instruments, something is very wrong with the pilot.

Technically speaking, during the "plane mode" or "flight mode" or "offline mode", the RF (Radio Frequency) is switched off.
