Kenneve888 4th Gear July 21, 2009 Share July 21, 2009 Seriously, it never pays to be an engineer. During my time, you got to have top grades to get into engineering faculty. Pays more school fees cos the course is longer and involves more material/tools but yet the 1st to be retrenched. So many of my engineering friends are done for. Yes, you are very correct. Engineering courses involved many practical sessions, lectures after lectures, Mon to Fri, morning to evening. I was shocked when told (not sure how true) some courses in our esteemed local Uni only required one to attend half a day of lessons each day, and even that, not every day of the week, and then most of the time would be "own time own target". Damn switch off one.....So who want to take up engineering course nowadays?
Will_I_Am 2nd Gear July 21, 2009 Share July 21, 2009 Now with the influx of Ah Tiong, local engineers can only suck thumb. Engineering used to have a tough entrance criteria during our times. Will_I_Am 2nd Gear July 21, 2009 Share July 21, 2009 It's possible if you start planning at 18 yrs old. Seriously it's all about planning for it. Due to inflation, accumulation of wealth at young age is slow due to high expenses and low income. You may need to accumulate for 20 years and only good to spend for 10 years. So overly early retirement is dangerous. It also destroy the achievement spriit of mankind and non contribution to the society that gave us the opportunity to be here. How are they going to survive? Retraininig is useless at this age even if you're willing.

Throttle2 Supersonic July 22, 2009 Share July 22, 2009 (edited) Hi all, Anyone here who has earned enough before official retirement age or contended with what they have put aside? and don't mind doing simple job just to kill time or live simple? For example, working part-time in Macdonald, 7-11 or clerical work and yet driving around in your beloved car after work. Or just live in a apartment or small house in neighouring countries for up to 6 months, shake legs and doing nothing? Regards, Eh, I wipe tables and smoke cigars, does that count? hehee Edited July 22, 2009 by Throttle2

Kelpie 2nd Gear July 30, 2009 Author Share July 30, 2009 Eh, I wipe tables and smoke cigars, does that count? hehee Thinking of doing something totally different from my current trade. But at my kind of middle age, it seems difficult for a switch. I'm contemplating to go into supermarket trade. perhaps start as a Managment Trainee of some kind . Low pay nevermind just want to learn new things all over again. Regards,
Ithunk 1st Gear July 30, 2009 Share July 30, 2009 My 2 cents is about expectation. I know a chap in his 30s. He was married and he mentioned that family life made it hard for him to make it in life. He was unhappy. Then he lived in a Condo (with loan), drove a Japanese sedan and has a low 6 figure saving/investment. Later, he got divorced and somehow his career took off. He probably made a few 8 figure sum in a few years. Now he stays in a full paid Condo and drive a fully paid semi supercar. During this financial crisis, he probably lost 8 figure sum but he should still have a 8 figure networth. If you ask him, he will say that he is unhappy because he has lost alot money during last year. Even though he is still better off than what he was a few years back. He remembered that in the past, he would be very happy if he has a 7 digit bank account. Now he is not even happy though he has a few million cash in his banks with no debt. Again, he is still in his 30s. Our expectation determines alot our happiness level. He will also say that the best scenario is to be wealthy and have a balance family life. However ask him to choose between his wealth or to save his marriage, he doesnt have an answer. His conclusion is that money cant bring happiness but money ususally can reduce unhappiness. One would choose to see his or her dearest possession at death. Rich or poor, many will choose to see their love ones, especially family members at death bed (not ferrari or GCB). I suppose most know what is important at the final moment. My 2 cents. sometimes being single is better.....i dunno how to explain....but it really works for some ppl

Dwoon 1st Gear July 31, 2009 Share July 31, 2009 8 more years till I reach 50 and I do hope to be your same position by then. In the meanwhile, still have to slog it out and take alot of sh1t I retired 10 years ago when I was 50. I retired because I wanted to spend more time with the missus. Not sure if that worked both ways though I've found it great but maybe I'm lucky and it wouldn't be suitable for everyone. Moneywise I did quite a bit of investing and until 2 years ago was making quite a bit, certainly enough to live on and to save. OK over the past two years my investments have taken quite a big hit but I'm still OK moneywise and we do a lot of travelling etc. When ever you retire you need to do a lot of planning financially and also with how you intend spending your time. You need to put as much thought and effort into retiring as you did when deciding on a career and how you would develop your career. ↡ Advertisement
