Watwheels Supersonic July 19, 2009 Share July 19, 2009 Might as well get a used Zafira 1.8L. It has a proper automatic gearbox. The one in Meriva you have to lift up your foot from the throttle during upshift. The MPV is also based on the Opel Corsa.

Tohto Hypersonic July 19, 2009 Share July 19, 2009 Drove the 1.4L manual version in Germany (rental car) for a few days. It is actually a very nice car. Very big rear leg space, boot is also very big even though this is quite a small car. Traveling at 160km/h on Autobann is still very stable even it is sitting quite high... If you take it easy, the shifts are really smooth.

Silver_blade Turbocharged July 20, 2009 Share July 20, 2009 (edited) I have a meriva. It is a good car and pretty reliable. The gear change is only jerky if you drive aggressively otherwise it is pretty smooth. Aggressive driving need to lift of the gas a little when changing the gear. Just treat it as a manual, instead of an auto trans and you will find the gear change to be 'normal'. It is just about getting used to it and accept that it is essentially a manual car. Shouldn't be a problem lah....my mum (given it to her) 'mastered' the technique in less than 2 days. i think the price you friend was quoted is attractive. I was quoted $7K for the body (mine is a '04 model) when I checked mid last year when i was considering to trade it in instead of keeping it. Tonicwater Neutral Newbie July 20, 2009 Share July 20, 2009 (edited) Might as well get a used Zafira 1.8L. It has a proper automatic gearbox. The one in Meriva you have to lift up your foot from the throttle during upshift. The MPV is also based on the Opel Corsa. Not all Zafiras have actual automatic gearboxes. Only Zafira A 1.8 and Zafira B 2.2. The current Zafira B 1.8s are all MTA. The Meriva 1.6 uses the same MTA gearbox as well. And yes, MTA isn't your normal auto gear box so the TS need to get used to it. Or better, try it to make sure can live with it before getting. Picanto 3rd Gear July 21, 2009 Share July 21, 2009 Are you guys saying that OPEL is using an automated manual gearbox similar to Alfa's Selespeed? alfa gearbox is of the higher end type. i doubt the opel gearbox can be compared to the alfa one. its like apple and oranges. Parkwalker Clutched July 21, 2009 Share July 21, 2009 Ever wondered why the owner wants to get rid of the car at such a low price? I suspect its maintenance cost... Used to own a corsa and the maintenance "killed" me. Simple servicing will cost you at least $500 - $1000, especially older cars. You can try to service outside but parts are hard to find. I used to hunt for parts in the whole of singapore, only to pay extremely high prices for original parts from GM because no where else sells the stuff. Mechanics can help you maintain the care but once parts spoils (which is fairly common for opel), that is it! In the end, you will save on the car but spend a hell lot more for parts and servicing... In fact, I got a pleasant shock when I realised how cheap servicing could be for japanese cars, even from agents! Maybe I am conti-accustomed then :) Buyers therefore beware... PS: BTW, easytronic always got problem. Heard of one person drive halfway, transmission stalled with "F" written on the shift indicator. The car had to be towed back for electronic refresh. The transmission hung, I think... While we could laugh at it, its not funny for the driver at that situation.
Kangadrool Supersonic July 21, 2009 Share July 21, 2009 (edited) Ever wondered why the owner wants to get rid of the car at such a low price? Seen a 2-year old Vectra 1.8MTA selling at just 48K few weeks back by direct owner and very tempted. But, it was snapped up within a few days. :) Heard too many stories of MTA/Easytronic/Selespeed/DSG screwing up. In a nutshell, either stick to shift stick (full manual) or traditional torque converter autobox.
