The instructors and my coursemates knew very well what I think about the army in general. The government sends you a letter saying you are required to turn on on some stupid day or they will jail you, throw you into some stupid vocation to serve their purposes and you're proud of it? It is not my fault that you have been brainwashed by the system from the first day to think that you should excel in something that you have been conscripted against your will into.

I fought the system every step of the way and left every single instructor and superior in no doubt of my views about the SAF. I suspect some of the lower ranked instructors in BMT and SISPEC kept my transgressions from their superiors because they knew I would challenge the system(not really the system since the system is almost challenge-proofed by all the scholars but how everyone follows the 8th core value instead) all the way. The idea is to arm yourself with the very knowledge that most people do not bother with - Mindef directives, TSR, camp regulation and stuff like that. You fight many small battles and win hoping it is enough to sustain you through all 2 years; if I were to conform like many others, I would have lost my identity and self.

The fact that I was still selected to be a PTI says a lot about the the selection process and criteria doesn't it?

Bro.. agree with u.. some pple do really get brainwashed.. think wat matters is life after ord

Precisely. Anytime someone mentions the Singapore Navy's competence, 2 words come to mind.

RSS Courageous.

Thatz the incompetence of the officer-of-watch and the bridge crew. The vessel is still at Changi Naval Base, not sure wat they going to do abt it.

I knew the CO of the vessel, he was an XO onboard my vessel before going over to RSS Courageous. XO is 2nd in command after the CO.

no matter what vocation we are... i think what's important is that we took pride in what we do...

I was a storeman. I hated the army. I hated the job. hated my superior. But i still did the best I could and was promoted to 3SG nevertheless with a glowing testimonial at that.

Past glory just leave it as that... let's look to the future....

In the past LCP and below served 2 years and CPL and abv 2-1/2 years.

During BMT, most of my fellow recruits tried to avoid going to SISPEC [laugh]

The officer-of-watch and bridge crew are part of the navy. When evaluating the navy's competency, you have to evaluate everyone as a whole. It doesn't matter if the CO is the best navyman alive because the vessel still cannot function properly.

I don't understand. If you hated everything so much, why did you still do the best you could? Fight them. Make them pay 1 foot for every inch they take from you. You should have pride, but not pride in what you are being forced to do. Have pride in yourself.

Yes, but then they changed it to education level. Poly and A level students were promoted to CPL no matter what and those with lower education had no chance of being CPL.

i think the life of ns boys now and in the future is going to get more real in terms of low intensity conflicts

in the past 15 years, before the 911 incident, ns boys trained for full scale conflicts

when i did guard duty as a nsboy, who will think about people sneaking into camp to do damage?? i mean everybody's mind was thinking: who the hell will want to sneak into a army camp, as this is the worst place to be

now we get our nsboys and nsmen to guard key installations like oil, airport.......

so far we are lucky not to have any occurance of a low instensity conflict but who knows what the future may bring?

yeah, some of my guys cried when just a few months before their ROD, the PC informed them that its now based on education level and as they were all poly batch, all have to serve 2.5 years, and some were promoted to CPL.

those days ROD dates (and NRIC) were scribbled on No 4s .... mine too ...

There are some incidents that I'm proud of when in the navy.

Who was there 1st when SQ plane went down in Palembang? Who did the recovery??? We were activated within an hour of the crash. My vessel was the standby vessel.

Who was there ready to evacuate Singaporeans from Indonesia during the riots??? FYI, we went from lightly loaded to full load within less than 12hrs and ready to evacuate every single Singaporean in Indonesian by FORCE. Indo indicated that they dont welcome us therefore a few of our strike craft went on full load ready to protect the land craft. Able to reach evacuate area within 5hrs of command from the top. This incident was not even publish in the papers. So I not sure if u guys should know also. [lipsrsealed]

While u sleep soundly in bed, civilians will never know wat it takes to defend the nation and its citizens be it in SG or Overseas. In the navy, u are constantly on standby. Only when the ship in dock then its time to relax.

If you've done guard duty in camp before, you'll know that the whole thing is a farce. How many people don't even bother to patrol the camp and just run somewhere else to sleep? How of those stupid enough to actually patrol are prepared to act if they encounter something?

My batch of BMT was what they called "Hokkien peng". most of us had little education, lectures were conducted using English, Chinese and Hokkien. All of us could have served 2 years but there were a handful of us selected to SISPEC
