Hi

I have using my stock (HU and speakers) since 4 years ago (Vios). The HU is extremely useless...cant even play mp3. I have to burn my mp3 to convert in audio CD using my PC.

Now i decided to use my budget $500, i noes it is not much. But i was hoping to get some upgrades. No point i buy a good HU but cheap speakers so i was hoping to balance out.

Requirement (Generally listen slow songs like Fish Leong and some rock songs as well)

1) I need a HU that can play mp3/CD (No need pretty LCD or DVD at all) Music quality important

2) I see my friends using his HU to play songs straight from his thumb drive but most of the time i see in forum that ppl are using ipod to drive? I guess Ipod quality is much better, so i hope to have ipod compability HU.

Lastly pls recommend me to some HU shops, i do not wish to go to some shops where they carrot me like hell cos i am noob. U can pm me the shops name/address if u do not wish post in the thread.

Thanks for help!!

Take a shopping walk into Sim Lim Tower, many shops selling car hifi. Ask for the cheapest Pioneer model that uses USB input. Around $250 you can get one and all of them play MP3. These are all export sets but quality is no different from agent warranty set. When agent put up a one year warranty, they already mark up on the price.

However, be careful about speakers. Many of them at fake branded stuff.

Iam hoping to find a shop to do installation for me as well since i am getting the speakers as well.

Do Sim Lim do installation as well?

they mostly do exports only. you still need to car a WS to do the installtion. moreover such sets do not come with local warranty. in short, not worth the savings.

Some newer Altis and Vios Original toyota HU comes with MP3 and 6 CD changer capability.

You might want to keep a lookout here or the toyota club.

check out those recommended Ice workshop in this forum, go to them with your budget and let them work things out.. see if you like it, then take it up.

with budget of $500, there's nothing much to make a carrot head out of you..

as to whether ipod give a better quality, it's actually the source file and the output channel which is your HU and speaker..

My friends Pionner HU can play mp3 from thumbdrive and i am wondering if ipod does not give better quality using AUX...y do i see many ppl using ipod. imagine a ipod is not cheap.

i got pm to get a HU first since the installation fee for HU and speakers are diff, so it does not matter.

lol so far i do not see anyone recomend me any HU...mayb i look around the forum to see if there are any popular one. Pionner seems to be quite a popular brand for car HU.

Before you go shopping around for a new HU, is your Vios's player built in? Because if it's built in then if you change to a new HU, you will need to buy a new center console that will allow you to change the HU...these days alot or cars come with built-in players...because it looks more integrated and nicer...

If it's not integrated...then no issue la...merely remove and replace :)

If i remember correctly, the stock Vios player is a 2DIN player...so if you want to change, you either need to find a 2DIn player or buy a bracket to use a 1DIN player...

Because Pioneer comes out with new models of HU every couple of years, so you can easily find a second hand but in working condition to replace your current HU. I suggest you be a bit more patient and see if anyone sells in the private sale threads.
