Idwish Clutched June 27, 2009 Share June 27, 2009 Hi guys...any good recommendation for good electric shaver? Have been using Braun for many years but I think beard getting thicker and don't seem to do the job well. Also can someone advise me what is the right way for manual shave? If I shave following the hair direction, I don;t seem to get a close shave. But if I go opposite, bleeding....even with foam and after shave cream. Had tried varies Gillette shave and seem none suit me well... ↡ Advertisement
Boyboy 1st Gear June 27, 2009 Share June 27, 2009 try the schick 4 blade shaver much better and more durable than gillette. problem is i can't seem to find the replacement blades. currently using mach 3, sensor excel and schick quattro. not using the schick for now until i can find spare blades. i use one shaver for sideburns and the other for beard. usually use the blunter shaver for sideburns since it's 'flat' surface, not so prone to cuts. and btw, i shave against the grain for electric, i believe it's not as close as wet shaving. but correct me if i'm wrong. i choose the low cost option. i also dun like the fact that u can't wash the blades of the electric shaver (unless it's the higher end models)
Ultramega 1st Gear June 27, 2009 Share June 27, 2009 Before shaving against the hair direction, you need to soften the hair first. One of the best times to do it is immediately after a hot-water bath.
Calp Neutral Newbie June 27, 2009 Share June 27, 2009 I avoid electric shavers as they make the hair grow haywire in all directions in the long term. As for the manual shave: I have switched from gillette mach X blah blah to shick quatro with the electric trimmer end. Much better. and 2 in 1... And the way to shave manually: Never against the hair growth direction ... Can cause ingrown hair, pimples etc... If you want sleekness, you can shave "along" the growth direction while pulling your skin up a little. That will make the hair stand up and ready for the chopper. On another note: The best is to use a straight razor... the ones that you'll see in old hollywood movies... It has a single razor and if you know how to use it, it will blow all the modern gillette, shick away... Well, using it requires skill or else you cut yourself more often than shaving the hair. That's why I don't dare... Maybe you can try.
Xspace 1st Gear June 27, 2009 Share June 27, 2009 Through my experience (haa), I find that it's the shaving cream / gel which really makes the difference. Get a good manual blade, and I recommend Natio Shaving Gel. I tried so many shaving cream/gel, this is the best even when my blade gets worn out... Used electric before, makes me itchy... Octopus 3rd Gear June 27, 2009 Share June 27, 2009 I also find shaving against the hair direction can give a cleaner shave, but I read somewhere that better to shave with the direction.

Boyboy 1st Gear June 27, 2009 Share June 27, 2009 do u mean the schick quattro titanium?? if yes ...ntuc do sell their replacement balde.. thanx for the tips, but cannot find it at the NTUC near my place, will keep a lookout for it when i do groceries. anyway, i using the mach 3/ sensor for now. when i finish those blades then i will make a more permanent switch to quattro for shaving gel, i will probably give the natio gel recommended by a bro here a try. currently using Supermax shaving gel. sounds like kok brand but it's much better and also cheaper than gillette shaving gels. those are hopeless. If I shave following the hair direction, I don;t seem to get a close shave. But if I go opposite, bleeding....even with foam and after shave cream. Had tried varies Gillette shave and seem none suit me well... heya.. previosuly i was using the Marc 3 to shave for 5 yrs. gave a close shave, but some times too close, hahaha.. plus whenthe blades get a little blunt, it gets quite irritating. after that i changed to phillips electric shaver, the water proof one, u can wet shave with cream, shave in the shower. i used that shaver for almost close to 4 years b4 the battery died out ( battery could last ard 2 weeks b4 charging) gave me a nice shave everytime, no cuts no nothin! no need to replace blades, after that, changed out to phillips new water proof shaver, also good, but the dam head can drop out easily, quite irritating. so for me, i'll go with the phillips electric. look at the water proof ones.. they ROCK! Mazdaowner Moderator June 27, 2009 Share June 27, 2009 Electric shaver is cheaper .... those Gillette blades are expensive .... If you want a really close and clean shave, the blades are the only way to go. I need to shave twice a day, morning after shaving, by 5-6pm, I already have a 5 o'clock shadow. Using the Braun wet shaver, but I still prefer the blade to anything else and I need to shave against the grain like some of the bros above, to get a clean close shave. Boh pian, the moment you use a blade on yrou face, that's the end of it, you will need to shave from then on. I'm still trying to keep my kids from shaving, use a trimmer, don't shave if can. So far, so good.
