Michael Schumacher was unmasked as the BBC car programme Top Gear's mysterious 'The Stig' on Sunday night.

The enigmatic white-overalled, gloved and helmeted figure, who for years has anonymously tested cars for the TV show, appeared on the floor of the British programme after breaking its test-track record at the wheel of the Ferrari FSX supercar.

Asked by host Jeremy Clarkson to take off his helmet, The Stig reluctantly obliged, revealing F1's now 40-year-old seven time world champion Schumacher.

Clarkson jokingly asked the famous German what his name was before he became famous as The Stig, but Schumacher answered: "You have to have some secrets".

However, the true identity of The Stig was unmasked by the press earlier this year as 33-year-old Ben Collins, although the speculation was not confirmed by the BBC and it remains rumoured that the character is actually played by multiple drivers.

A spokesman for the British broadcaster, meanwhile, confirmed that Schumacher was The Stig for the Ferrari segment, but that otherwise the truth would remain "a mystery".

[laugh] They always have a different Stig for different segments. This comes as no surprise.

I recall them having the African Stig, Communist Stig(red colour), Lorry/Bus(fat one) Stig, Regular Stig and now Schumacher Stig.

Could be some publicity stunt? After so many years, why reveal who The Stig is now? I think it is better to keep people guessing. Somehow it won't be the same if you know who is behind the helmet. Mystic lost?

There is a disclaimer by BBC after the show when iit spokeswoman says: "You have to bear in mind that Top Gear is an entertainment programme."

Nor did BBC confirm whether or not Schumacher was the genuine Stig, or a stunt to mark the first episode of a new series of Top Gear.

Just watch and enjoy the programme at the end of the day. This it is some marketing gimmick as this season's production budget was slashed. Looking forward what kinda review and challenges they have for this season.

I'm just waiting for them to unmask The Stig as some ah-pek Singaporean taxi driver with their crazy driving skills.

Now, that'll be one to remember!!

Michael Schumacher's appearance as the Stig is only because of the Ferrari Supercar at the test track. Do you actually think he has the time to drive the cars since Series 3? He was busy racing at F1 lor.

If you are an avid follower of the Top Gear series, it's not hard to see that they are using multiple drivers for Stig. Some episodes will have the Stig with the big stomach whereas the following episode the Stig seems thinner.

great to have TG back!

I think one reason why he was the stig in this episode was that the car he drove on track was his own, ( i know he owns one in this same colour) he probably wont have anyone else drive it. And it definitely adds to the publicity.

Schumacher's definitely not the Stig. Coz at the end of that episode, he actually lost his way while driving the Liana. And he didn't lose his way in his FXXX. How can it be?
