Hi All

Saw BM offering Built-in Garmin Navigation function in Altis on Saturday ST, and then same day went to Suntec IT Show and saw Garmin booth very crowded, many pple buying the portable navigation device.

Thus, sudden thought, would like to check if given a choice, do you prefer your car to have a built-in navi function or prefer to get a portable one (assuming both using Garmin software)

Btw, I do a check, BM offering Garmin is using Teleatlas map while if buying at the IT show or other places like Carrefour, we can go to website such as Malsingmap.com to download without charges. Anyone know which map is better, Teleatlas or Malsingmap?

Cheers

Yup, I was told by BM too that they only provide 1 time free update of map within the 1st year. But I just wonder can one do free update of map through Malsingmap.com if the garmin navi is purchase from BM, the built-in one.

I went to Garmin website and read that as long as its Garmin Navi, can go to Malsingmap.com to have free update. I check with BM on this but the salesman cannot confirm.

I quite like the built-in feature, look great, as per what I saw in Japan.

Portable GPS system theft reportedly up 700%!!

I'm using a Eonon GPS with detachable face right now, quite good. I'm taking it away while leaving. play it safer.

Eonon GPS...is it good, compare to Garmin one? How much you paid for it? Map wise, can use Malsingmap.com too or they have their own map provider?

Thanks

its better to trade in this built in gps for some cash. you can then use that cash to buy a portable gps. when its time to sell the car, the portable gps still can be used. but of course, its always cool to have an in-built gps in the car.

In-built GPS looks cool and nice, but a portable one is more practical.

I'm not too sure how are the updates done for the built-in ones. Do u have to drive back to BM for them to update for u, or u can just detached it from ur ride easily?

For me, I'm using a portable one from Garmin. Besides TA & MSM maps, you can opt for MFM maps which are free and the updates is weekly, much faster than the former 2. You can check them out at their respective forums.

Furthermore, when you r traveling overseas without ur ride, you can just take the unit and go, updated with the latest map of that particular place that u r visiting.

most impt 4 mi is........portable gps is viewed from e windscreen at eye level which i felt is more comfy. Whereas built-in one ve to be viewed at a lower angle which is v distracting. imagine looking up n down e road n e screen...pretty dangerous i wuld say [cool]

You can get the Indonesian maps from navigasi.net HERE. This free map is very detailed and runs only on Garmin devices, just like malsingmaps. If you want Thailand maps, you can visit Jerome's website at http://gpsmaps.jwpixs.com/index.php?option...select&id=4 However, you gotta make a donation to have access to all his maps of various places.
