Hermitage 1st Gear June 15, 2009 Share June 15, 2009 Don't think it's because of any of the reasons listed in the poll. More likely, it's an accent derived from some widely spoken dialect in the past, that has filtered down through the generations. It's certainly not the correct way to speak Mandarin! Besides, do you not think the PRCs find the Singaporean brand of Mandarin funny as well??

Axela72 5th Gear June 15, 2009 Share June 15, 2009 Same to philpino, they speck English like robot. Often has a hard time when calling helpdesk as lot of them has been working as operator. Have to request them to repeat what their are saying until they thought I don't understand English. Also Indian from India. Their English is like speaking Indian which sometime I catch no ball. Strife Neutral Newbie June 15, 2009 Share June 15, 2009 i am thinking it is because they do not have formal chinese education. Otherwise if you do hanyu pinying, it is very hard to go that out of tone. Their pronunciation is not within the 4 tones at all. Comparatively, our local spoken chinese is usually off by 1 tone for many characters. Our usage of chinese is also blurred with the numerous inclusive of english words. inlinesix Hypersonic June 15, 2009 Share June 15, 2009 When young they can choose to go either Chinese sch or Gov sch.. Gov sch nvr teach Chinese 1... so got a grp of chinese msians, the mandarin is self taught through talking with others, reading, etc... U only half rite lah. For Primary 1 - 6, there is Chinese govt school & National School. For National School, everything is in Malay. No Chinese at all. For Chinese govt school, everything is in chinese except English & Malay. From Sec 1 - 5, there is 2 stream, Chinese Private School & National School. For National School, u still get to study Chinese provided that the Secondary School has a Chinese Name. For National School, there is also JC equivalent after Sec 5. However, no Chinese. For Chinese Private School, in Sec 1 - 3, everything is in Chinese except English & Malay. For Sec 4 - 6, except Geography, History, English & Malay, everything is in English. History & Geography is in Chinese. Why Malaysian's mandarin sounds funny? Because it is full of dialect equivalent especially Hokkien & Cantonese. Try this 一头雾水。

Anniewan99 Neutral Newbie June 15, 2009 Share June 15, 2009 Weird.... I spoken to some taiwanese uni students and they told me actually lian pang mandarin is better understood by them, not talking about the 几够力华语, Singamandarin is sometimes more difficult to understand with the monotone - listens to comments from mandarin speaking country instead of covering our ears ! Robin 4th Gear June 16, 2009 Share June 16, 2009 cos its probably bcos their chinese can also learn and speak malay in school from young... so its a bit of a mandarin/malay mix our mandarin sounds funny to them too
