SINGAPORE: Mas Selamat Kastari, the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) leader who escaped from Whitley Road Detention Centre last year, has reportedly been arrested in Malaysia.

Mas Selamat gave his guards the slip while he was being taken to the toilet at the detention centre on 27 February 2008.

He was involved in a plot to hijack a plane and crash it into Singapore's Changi Airport.

Mas Selamat's escape resulted in the dismissal of the detention centre's superintendent over security lapses. The superintendent's deputy was demoted.

The two were the most senior officers in charge of the ground management of the detention centre, and were among six Internal Security Department (ISD) officers charged over the escape.

Two Gurkha officers were also charged and have been demoted after pleading guilty.

The Special Duty Operative handling the detainee's family visit when the incident happened was also sacked. - CNA

Hope he is indeed arrested.

Amazing how indon and m'sian police managed to tracked him down and arrest him. They are much larger than s'pore. We have quite a lot to learn from them.

Mas couldn't afford the coffee money.

More like times are bad...some people need cash.

Anyway, I am sure some JI members will have no problem giving him up, since Mas wasn't exactly 'steady' when he 'betrayed' one of his JI 'brother' when he was arrested in Indon.

Mas Selamat captured

Fugitive who escaped from Whitley detention centre last year is tracked down and captured in Johor after tip-off from Singapore; he is being held for interrogation by Malaysia

By Leslie Lopez, Senior Regional Correspondent

Sources told The Straits Times that Mas Selamat was tracked down based on intelligence provided by Singapore's Internal Security Department (ISD), and a joint operation by Malaysia and Singapore's security agencies eventually led to his arrest.

KUALA LUMPUR: Thirteen months after his audacious escape from detention in Singapore, Mas Selamat Kastari has been caught in Malaysia.

Singapore's most wanted terrorist was captured on April 1 while hiding in Johor, regional intelligence sources told The Straits Times.

It is believed that he was nabbed in the outskirts of Johor Baru and is now being held by the Malaysian authorities for interrogation.

It is not known how he slipped out of Singapore or when he entered Malaysia.

Although he was arrested six weeks ago, the Malaysian authorities have not yet announced the capture.

A senior Malaysian government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the arrest and said that Mas Selamat was being held under the country's Internal Security Act.

He declined to say when the terrorist would be handed over to the Singapore authorities.

It is believed that the fugitive had stayed in Johor all this time and had not travelled further north. He is also believed to be detained in Johor.

Sources told The Straits Times that the 48-year-old was tracked down based on intelligence provided by Singapore's Internal Security Department (ISD), and a joint operation by Malaysia and Singapore's security agencies eventually led to his arrest.

The capture of Mas Selamat brings to an end one of the largest manhunts ever undertaken by Singapore and its neighbours for a terrorist on the run.

Since the neighbour is so efficient, better let him stays there and don't come back to upset our lives here. Hearsay the jailhouse condition is alot more hostile than here [sweatdrop]. Wait come back and later escape again from the highly paid elites then how? Reputational risk to SG.

And to add the embarassment to let him slip out of the country. And all these time they try to affirm that he is still in the country until recently changed to a maybe he here or there.
