High idle speed and CEL after engine rebuild

Hello everyone,

What are the possible causes for a CEL and high idle speed after engine rebuild?

CEL came on 4 times over a span of 3 days and 250km. [:(]

Returned to workshop and mechanic said there it was loose wiring.

ECU was reset and CEL came on again after 19km, idle speed is still high. [bigcry]

FC has also increased tremendously. [smallcry]

Thanks. [drivingcar]

It can be for quite a few reasons. Did your mech check what the fault code was??

Check with your mech and tuner. It's not done right.

Or goto a reputable tuning shop to have it checked out if your mech/tuner is unable/unwilling to resolve it.

They do not have an OBD-II scanner, have to send it to one which has. [sweatdrop][bigcry]

They also mentioned that idle speed is controlled by ECU and its impossible to adjust. [:|]

Idle speed in "D" and "R" is 1500rpm. [dead]

Yup, looks like you need to go to an external workshop with an OBD scanner, and one that knows how to adjust your idle speed too. Impossible hogwash.

Neutral Newbie

did they unplug the battery and wait for 5 mins before replugging it?

Something similar happened to my car before and the mech just did this to reset the ecu... and it worked for me.

Did it 4 times and the CEL would return after a short drive.

Something is wrong. [smallcry]

Hi 'Garlic', I had a similar problem on my car. I sent my car to the mechanics but they were unable to resolve the problem.

One day, I checked all the cables connection myself and found that one of the performance cables to the spark plugs head was loose. I then used a cable tie to tighten up the end. After that, the rpm dropped to the normal 800rpm.

If you have installed an air charger, also check the ends of the blue hose as it will split after some time due to the heat. This will also cause the rpm to increase very high because of air escape.

To solve this problem, change to the black thick hose and tighten the end with the black or white colour tie.

I hope the above is one of the causes that you might be encountering.

Hi,

Do you use aftermarket air filter? My CEL light came on shortly after tuning and I thought it was due to the tuning. But it turned out to be that my aftermarket filter had been too worn out after several 000km (Which i tried to clean, oil and reuse)

I replaced it with another aftermarket air filter and the CEL was gone.

Just FYI.

I think we are driving the same car, how come you require to rebuild your engine??

Got caught in a freak storm couple of weeks ago, water entered from exhaust and ruined engine.

Thanks Mike, will give your suggestion a try this weekend.

Returned to workshop today and they sent it to another place with OBD-II scanner. Was told CEL is caused by "wiring problem" and that they are unable to trace and repair it. [speechless]

They even suggested returning to agent as their workshop is not equipped with the proper tools.

Clearly you selected the wrong workshop to rebuild your engine. Always go to one that is able to do both the mechanical (engine rebuild, wiring etc) and the software (ECU and tuning).

Go find one that can do that for your make and model.

Such shops may not be available in Spore even if they claim to be expert in all the specialised areas.

There are. But usually not for normal sedans.
