“60 is the new 40” — Sylvia Lim on the important role of older workers (msn.com)

SINGAPORE: In Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 27), Workers’ Party MP Sylvia Lim (Aljunied GRC) underlined how important older workers are to Singapore, saying “60 is the new 40.”

She expressed concerns over age discrimination in the workplace, telling the story of one man in his 70s with many years of experience in the healthcare industry who “found it near impossible to land an interview, let alone secure a job.”

To be objective, if you have long line of 20s-40s lining up for the job, why will any private employer employ the 70s guy?

Age discrimination? Qualification discrimination? Let Civil services and Ah gong agencies lead the way by example.

Otherwise is just wind cool talk.

You have built sufficient reserves long ago to retire very comfortably anytime now, and if kena, your payout should be very handsome too . 😀

Yeah i  built it up myself.
In other words i desiged it to be so by being the ant and not the grasshopper.

But retrenchment is still loss of stable income..

so hope i get retrenched together with many other people?  Ok?

The ideal situation is this:

1) Work a job you enjoy, so you don't feel so stressed

2) Hopefully the remuneration is decent. Enough to sustain an good standard of living

3) But also have enough time for you to 'disconnect' outside of work and do other things. Not on call 24/7.

Of course, the world is not perfect, so very rarely you will manage to hit all 3 in the right balance. So it really is what you wanna give up more.

Most people will sacrifice (1). Some people can accept less of (2) or (3). There's no real right or wrong. It depends on what suits you and your lifestyle and what you're okay with.

I am well over your set point of 55 😆. Yes, it is not for love and $ is the key motivation. Of course I do enjoy my work because it was what I have been doing for the past 45 years.

Would I retired, yes when I don't find the meaning of continuing or I am no more contributing. Meanwhile, it is a well balanced job where I still kept here in MCF. 😆

Be grateful you guys have a job you are still in.

Better than driver, security guard, cleaners or F&B staff.

for the longest time, I believe the Military have a short fall of people joining the services. I feel this is a Gap that can be easily filled by the 20 to 40 or even 60s

Good for you, especially since you love your work, there is no need to stop by your own accord in that case.   Absolutely not.

also becos you are well over the point of 55, there are probably things which you could do when you were younger that you cannot today.

Will you be very upset assuming you are an employee and your boss retrenches you tomorrow?
