The Spillover Begins

In recent years violent crimes that involved foreigners living in Singapore were often perpetrated against their own countrymen. These murders were crimes of passion - usually between foreigners who knew each other. It's work-related stress some would say, which are very much isolated incidents within the foreign worker community, others would mention to allay public fears.

Many in several online forums say that a lax policy of allowing in foreign "talent" would eventually import crime to Singapore.

But would crimes where foreign malefactors - who care little about (or are simply oblivious to) local laws and enforcement - commit violent crimes against law-abiding locals who are perfect strangers? What if it becomes random out of greed (murder-robberies/kidnap) or lust (rape)?

Is this the first sign of that spillover?

Decomposed body identified

April 21, 2009

By Diana Othman

THE highly decomposed body found in a forested area off Sembawang Road last week has been identified as cabby Yuen Swee Hong, 58.

Police have arrested a suspect - a Chinese national - in connection to his death.

The 30-year-old suspect will be charged in court on Wednesday with murder, which carries the death penalty on conviction.

Mr Yuen was believed to have been robbed and killed.

It is understood that the Special Operations Command and the Police Dog Unit combed the area for clues for almost 15 hours after the grisly find.

Mr Yuen was one of the two bodies discovered last week.

The body of 35-year-old Bharat Singh was retrieved from the Singapore River opposite The Riverwalk complex on Sunday morning.

I'm unsure of the details, but if the alleged killler did this simply because it was a means for him to rob someone, anyone, then maybe we should all start being concerned and question whether being overly-welcoming is such a good idea after all.

I hope I'm overreacting. I really do. But I can't help but worry if this becomes a trend.

Cabby's murder: man charged

By Elena Chong

A CHINA national, charged on Wednesday with a cabby's murder, had apparently tried to extort $150,000 from the taxi driver's wife.

Wang Wenfeng, 30, was first produced in court last week together Wang Wufu for attempted extortion of $150,000 from Madam Chan Oi Lin, a housewife, by putting her in fear that harm would befall her husband, Mr Yuen Swee Hong, 58.

The alleged offence took place near Beach Road at about 9am on April 11.

Mr Yuen's decomposed body was found in a forested area off Sembawang Road last Friday.

Wenfeng is accused of murdering Mr Yuen at Jalan Selimang in Sembawang between 10.57pm on April 10 and 6.52am the next day.

Wufu, who was charged in court last week for attempted extortion, was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal on Wednesday.

Wenfeng is remanded at Central police division for further investigation.

His case will be mentioned on April 29.

Eh, if you really want to complain about crimes by foreign nationals, you will need statistics. One case doesn't mean anything.

What about the case of Huang Na and the factory girl whose body got cut into pieces by local?

Sinkies committing crime overseas (eg, Sinkie soldier killing his room mate in Kangaroo land) are exceptions. Sinkies don't commit crime overseas. Whereas foreigners committing crime in Sinkie land, even if only one case, IS A TREND....

Face it bro, xenophobic sinkies only read what they want to support their cause. Their brains automatically censor any thing that goes against their views.

I feel your opinion is misleading.

Crimes can be committed by anyone. They can be 'down and out' locals or foreigners.

To equate that low class foreigners tend to be more violent and prone to crime is not exactly true.

The ability to commit crimes lies in the poor psycholgical ability of the person to cope with life challanges so they use criminal acts as a alternative way out.

There is more truth to say....a person with a low esteem, fares poorly in life, mixes with bad company tend to commit crimes.

The above applies both to the local Sinkies as well as to foreigners.

Most violent crimes committed abroad are crimes of passion - between people who already know each other over some emotional or money issues. They are not random robbery murders.

I did not say that it is a trend. I posed a question whether this is the beginning of a trend. I do not know whether it will be a trend. I'm just creating a discussion. No xenophobia but we have to ask ourselves whether a carte blache opening of doors to foreigners of all backgrounds is the best policy for our people.

Supercharged

Errmm,,,

I tink 190yrs ago, After Raffles landed in Singapore, and our forefathers came to Singapore, the crime rate also went up right... And back then, the locals must be also like this TS cursing and swearing, and w/o proper statistics went on to slam the "foreigners" who decades later became part and parcel of Singapore

There is nothing funny or strange about this phenomenon, which is growing here.

Up north in Boleh-land, they also have this problem of soaring crime-rate due to foreign workers, esp indons. No surprise that Johor which hosts many of these workers, also has one of the highest violent crime rates... and we're talking about those parang-wielding, rob-and-rape types.

If we're not careful...

you do realise that most of these crime-committing Indon workers in Boleh land that you're referring to ARE illegal immigrants there right? illegals in that country number more than a million, with the bulk of them Indons. to get these illegals out, the Boleh govt even had an amnesty initiative for them to surrender without punishment so that they can be sent back.

this is different from the situation here, where the FTs are legit.
