Kianbeng Clutched April 18, 2009 Share April 18, 2009 Hi Bros, I'm making a trip to London in May. Was thinking of checking out any electronics / car gadgets there. Is there anything worth to look out for? My friends in UK told me that normally they come SG to buy electronics and almost everything is expensive there. Is that true? ↡ Advertisement
Amortifiedpenguin Clutched April 18, 2009 Share April 18, 2009 quite true. u can try looking for high end fashion brands. those MAY be cheaper there. or get some Bugatti car cologne or a Porsche pipe for tobacco. or a Ferrari paperweight, or an audi carbon fibre ash tray. check out Top Gear christmas specials for cool stuff to get. Kianbeng Clutched April 18, 2009 Author Share April 18, 2009 ya I guessed so. But thought of asking around just in case my understanding is wrong. If it's going US, then I guess it's a better place for car gadgets right. Was thinking of buying a OBD reader for my W210. Those that I saw on ebay are shipped from US. I know it's made in China...so maybe another place is shen zhen for such OBD readers. But Garmin is from UK right??

Kianbeng Clutched April 26, 2009 Author Share April 26, 2009 Garmin is widely available in he UK....but not sure if it is cheaper there. Saw it being sold in some supermarket, department store, etc... Just checked the price for Garmin 205W in London. From the online price its about SGD320? Maybe it's about $100 savings as compared to buying here based on local sets. But I'm wondering if I can come back and then load SG/Msia maps using those from local set? Also not sure if warranty is covered here......
Silver_blade Turbocharged April 26, 2009 Share April 26, 2009 I'm fairly sure installing Malsing map shouldn't be a problem....but warranty coverage could be limited. Better check on their T&C for international warranty.
Whitecvt Clutched April 27, 2009 Share April 27, 2009 (edited) Car stuff generally more expensive there If you see a Poundland > you might wanna check out some stuff like a case of assorted Fuses ? Speed Radars are probably the most worth it... dont bother getting those GPS based type as they probably wont have the maps/camera positions for SG. If its other electronic stuff, maybe just the usual gadgets? UK has lots of gadget shops and u'll find lots of stuff not available in SG. Or if you dont mind a bit of bulky stuff, maybe some ICE from Argos :P Else you may want to drop by Halfords, tho they are usually expensive, but sometimes u might just get a cheap Thatchham II immobilizer .... Kianbeng Clutched May 2, 2009 Author Share May 2, 2009 If I buy a Garmin 205w there, it's only like 149pounds. And if I bring back, would I be able to install those Malsing maps or whatever free maps for Singapore and JB area??
Kianbeng Clutched May 2, 2009 Author Share May 2, 2009 ya I think warranty likely to be a problem. According to what I search online, ppl are saying if you buy from outside from sg resellers, if anything is spoilt within the 1 year, you will have to bear the cost for shipment to Taiwan as thats the nearest place in Asia for warranty. But if you buy from those resellers in sg, they will be bearing the cost of shipment. I believe thats why it cost more? ie Garmin 205W is 149GBP which is about $329. But in SG I think it's S$399. Actually savings not say alot lah but I realised a GPS will be helpful for me while I'm in London/Paris to walk about. But if I were to buy the Garmin set here, I don't know if I can get free maps in London.
