Then again, it only applies when I'm first in line and most probably the only one, most parts of the day, I have trailers, 40 footers, day dreamers in front of me and the long-ish traffic light becomes too short for my liking. The point is this, traffic lights are there for a reason in our built up areas, these traffic lights are not erected for drivers' convenience but for pedestrians. Maybe 9 times out of 10, that traffic light crossing would be deserted, but on the 10th time when we become complacent, an accident happens. There is also a reason why sensors are built underneath the tarmac at controlled junctions, to activate/shorten the traffic light timings when a car is stopped on top of the sensors. There are also junctions where you'll see signs that tells drivers the lights timing will change at different parts of the day. The thing about our powers that are, they are reactive rather than proactive and when they are proactive, it's usually never good, so what's the lesser of the two evils? There is no doubt about the studies you cited, but if you look at the car ownership of Copenhagen, it is even more expensive than Singapore with their taxes, which is why large percentage of them cycle. Compare apple to apple and you'll realise that it isn't all that bad. Lastly, we are all amused not by your reasons, but by the video of which, we assume you are the WRX in the video, you blatantly ignored the red light. That is the problem. Nicely written, some people are just trying to cover their mistake with excuses.

Obey_my_dog 2nd Gear March 8, 2016 Share March 8, 2016 Having a high number of traffic lights is all nice and good but we have definitely crossed the point of having a ridiculous number of traffic lights. This will cause many drivers to prioritize whether to stop at traffic junctions at all. Those traffic lights with camera, pay attention and follow the lights. Those traffic lights without camera, see no car no pedestrian just go. Those traffic light pedestrian crossings, see no pedestrian just go. This is what happens when you have too many traffic light junctions......similar to a "cry wolf" effect And the most important fact of all even with the ever increasing number of traffic light junctions and traffic light cameras, there are still many traffic accidents daily and the joke is that it seems to happen at traffic light junctions. Think about it......is having more traffic light or traffic light cameras the solution?
Kb27 Supersonic March 8, 2016 Share March 8, 2016 (edited) When you have too many traffic lights that turns red when you approach, guess what ? Drivers learn to beat the red lights more often. When you have green wave timed at 60 km/h from one traffic light to another, drivers will learn to drive at 60 km/h. Pack more housing, commercial and industrial buildings into a smaller area, you need denser road networks to link them all up. Denser road network means more junctions and consequently more traffic lights. Just keep a logical mind and it is not that difficult to realize why. People who keep harping on red light at every single junction simply tune out in their mind the times when they go pass a junction when it is green. Selective memory. TP needs to come down hard on these drivers who think they can ignore the red light just because they think there are too many red lights on the roads. Cannot just drive slower so that the time spent waiting that the lights is less? If a driver drives at 60km/h and has to stop at every traffic light cuz he reaches the next one too quickly, then drive at 50km/h or 40km/h? Like that, he won't need to wait so long at the next traffic light. I think 30-40km/h is the sweet spot cuz when I cycle at 30km/h, lights usually stay green all the way. Just nice for me to clear the lights at every junction. I'll meet the same cars who overtook me at every junction. They have to stop cuz of the red light.

Obey_my_dog 2nd Gear March 8, 2016 Share March 8, 2016 You gotta at realize at some point that anyone and everyone who is a motorist is a victim of these poor traffic light sequence planning. I think its about time we the public motorists stop making excuses for the LTA on their poor road planning(traffic lights, junctions, traffic cameras, speed cameras all included). Majority of us tend to focus on the things we don't like. It is evident that you hate red lights. You seem to think that the red lights have been timed specially for you. Furthermore, you notice red lights more because you have to stop when it is red, but green you can just ignore and continue driving. Makes the red lights seem even more frequent. Why not try focusing on how many green lights you encounter? You might be surprised and happier. Edited March 8, 2016 by Nzy

Steptronic Supercharged March 8, 2016 Share March 8, 2016 I guess our traffic laws allows us to move to the boxes to make right turn and wait for an oppurtunity to execute the turn (if there is no red arrow for right) and also feel that we can complete the turn even if straight is red and no green right arrow. Otherwise, technically I am no man's land if I buy your arguement bro! On 3/7/2016 at 4:43 AM, Turboflat4 said: You have the right as long as the lights are green in your favour *and* oncoming traffic/crossing pedestrians are clear. Of course you don't have the right to beat a red light unless there is an explicit green arrow allowing a turn*. *Only exception is junctions with "Left Turn on Red" sign, but those are rare. Usual cautions apply. In this case, the car crossed the first set of lines on amber, so the OP should prevail on appeal, but why even expose oneself to all the hassle? I am now very careful with amber lights.

I think its about time we the public motorists stop making excuses for the LTA on their poor road planning(traffic lights, junctions, traffic cameras, speed cameras all included). I did a test that day driving to a nearby place from home. I had a 50/50% green / red. Distance 5 km Assuming I drive 60 km/h if not stopping, I can reach within 5 minutes. 60 km in 1 hour (60 minutes ) 1 km in 1 minute thus 5 km in 5 minutes But a traffic light stops me for 1 minute. Total traffic light I approached, 18 !!! 9 of them are red add waiting time, 9 X 1 minute = 9 minute. Total travel time increases to 9 + 5 = 14 minutes Imagine I waited 9 minutes to travel a 5 minute distance. Therefore you are correct bro.. Traffic lights are causing a lot of fuel wastage. I am a go green guy, and it really boils my blood to see carbon emission and heat generated to cause harm to our children. OK.. I just bull shit about the last statement .. ↡ Advertisement
