Boyboy 1st Gear March 29, 2009 Share March 29, 2009 what earth hour? tax dollar more important lah. u want earth hour? i say subsidise pubic tpt and make it much better, more efficient. something car drivers actually don't mind taking. give more tax breaks to CNG cars, subsidise CNG and tax petrol some more. subsidise euro 4 diesel instead of taxing the vehicles like they are now. give us bicycle lanes. i see ang moh's commuting by bike in SG these days. but these pple got balls. i don't anymore, after having more than my fair share of close shaves. anyway, i didn't bother about earth hour. i feel it may work the wrong way. make people think that by turning off the lights they made the difference. bollocks. but to some pple, earth hour trendy mah, happening. good for them, then... Boyboy 1st Gear March 29, 2009 Share March 29, 2009 In Singapore the single biggest influencing body is dragging their feet. They are called THE GOVERNMENT. If they do not introduce programmes to push for renewable energy, everything else, including NGO effort, goes to waste. they do, but half-hearted. $ matters most. see the flop that CNG is. only works for certain pple who live near the stations. not that i was really tempted, given the amount that i would have to invest in the conversion. Carcraze 1st Gear March 30, 2009 Share March 30, 2009 commemorated earth hour by having candle light dinner with the family on the roof patio. turned off all lights/air conditioners and most electric appliances (except for a few such as the refrigerators) between 8.30-9.30pm. Toapayohkid 1st Gear March 30, 2009 Share March 30, 2009 to all bros here who practice earth hour, steady! i also observe. went for walk around the neighbourhood and see some who also participate as their lights off at 830pm. but many also left lights on. maybe next time those who participate should put candle outside door to show support! more visible like that
Pcslim Neutral Newbie March 30, 2009 Share March 30, 2009 Not intend to be a wet blanket here. But can't help thinking that this so-called earth hour is just a wayang show. We all need lights to be on at night, don't we? What I did was to turn the other electrical appliances like TV, radio, PC, etc all off but kept the lights on. Bentwy Neutral Newbie March 30, 2009 Share March 30, 2009 the amount of energy and resources pumped into advertising this stupid event is already much much much more than you can save from not using your electrical applicances for 1 hour. It's a gimmick that tries to jump on the recently 'cool' bandwagon of environmentalism. total piece of BS imo.
Bentwy Neutral Newbie March 30, 2009 Share March 30, 2009 bro. no offence. but your candle is much more environmentally unfriendly than a typical light bulb. Also, your fridge consumes more energy than half of your applicances combined. I thought this whole thing is overly marketed. 1 hour of pseudo-environmentalist measures, to make your soul feel better about 365 days of apathy. it's your lifestyle that matters. not 1 hour. not preaching lar. but i'm one of the only dudes at my block who recycles stuff. then earth hour comes and my usually nonchalent neighbours nags at me to switch off my energy saver lights for one hour when i needed to read. Shull Turbocharged March 30, 2009 Share March 30, 2009 while i agree going back to the stone age is not the solution to global warming..We need a change in lifestyle to slow down or totally stop global warming.. as bro Silver_blade mentioned..earth hour is merely done to create awareness..and i did it's job pretty nicely IMO.. without it, we won't be discussing about it here..and no one will point out that we need a change in lifestyle etc etc.. Bentwy Neutral Newbie March 30, 2009 Share March 30, 2009 it's like yelling at someone to be courteous. just doesn't work for me. I mean... so much resources to raise awareness about global warming? you mean without earth hour, pple didn't know???? i have students who raved about earth hour. but after the hype... well... yes they are now very aware there's earth hour. Rpmh Neutral Newbie March 31, 2009 Share March 31, 2009 (edited) In saving the earth...not really but raising awareness it has done well. For the first time, I saw a lot of houses not lighted. The Earth Hour was a great thing. I never thought so many people would participate. This shows people are united and will stand for a cause. Even my kids asked me what is it all about, and this has stirred up their interest. Edited March 31, 2009 by Rpmh

Toapayohkid 1st Gear March 31, 2009 Share March 31, 2009 so anyone keen on having their own earth hours on a monthly, weekly or even a daily basis? or just talk only? while i support the philosophy behind earth hour, it is a bit dramatic. maybe what we all can do is just turn off the lights, radio etc at the switch and not leave it on standby when we don't need them. own time own target. no need this big campaign from now on, just use less electricity, water, recycle and byob at supermarts. small things make a difference if everyone do their bit :)

Shull Turbocharged March 31, 2009 Share March 31, 2009 so anyone keen on having their own earth hours on a monthly, weekly or even a daily basis? or just talk only? I've started doing it quite sometime ago... - Always turn off my lights and fan whenever i'm not in the room..even for a short while. - All electrical switches are off whenever no one uses them. Nothing is in standby mode unless absolutely essential - PC is on whenever i am at home, coz every restart will take at least 8-10 mins..but monitor is always off if i'm not sitting in front of PC.. - Power down my processor and GPU voltage since most of the task i do on PC is non-processor intensive - Avoid taking plastic bags from supermarkets or minimart..I bring my own bag, those reuseable canvas type, or if i didn't buy much items, simply hand carry them.. - For once, i started taking public transport to school(if my lesson starts on peak hour) instead of driving. Can beo on bus, enjoy and relax on the bus instead of stressing out the jams. There are alot more things that can be done..just whether you want to do it or not..
