Memories of old Kai Tak

OK as some of you know, I have just returned from Hong Kong.

At the Chek LapKok airport, there is this aerospace exhibit which featured Kai Tak.

I am fascinated by Kai Tak. I have never landed on Kai Tak before. I wish I had. You only live twice as the James Bond movie said. Once when you are born and once when you land at Kai Tak Airport. [sweatdrop]

I've been fishing around the Internet and I found this website:

http://www.kaitak.tv/

Check out the cool videos of landing at Kai Tak.

Turbocharged

I read on wiki that over the hill behind kowloon or new territories there are markers which act as waypoints for the pilots to land..

this video basically sums up everything

kinda scary man..but i agree, it's one of a lifetime experience..

Also, on discovery channel, there's a 1hr documentary that details the building of the new Chek Lap Kok airport, how they reclaim a big island out of 2 small islands and how they move the whole airport operations in just 6 hours.. [thumbsup]

First visit to HKG in 94, landed in Kai Tak. Upon exit, it was like a mess. The road was very congested. Understand that the plane have to approach the airport from the mountain side.

Landed into HK Kai Tak many times, worse was when a typhoon was on the way, the plane shook liek it was about to be

ripped apart, took off in time before the warning was given, if not, would have been stuck till the typhoon blew over.

Hated most was the immigration officers and their metal detectors, picking you out from the angmos to step up onto

a step for inspection. Bloody rude.

Best was landing there in a military plane, totally no hindrances. [laugh]

Yes my ex-company was involved in the Chek Lap Kok construction in the early 90's. We were performing hydrographic surveys on that area. Sdie Scan sonar, Echo sounding and seismic profiling. Used to travel to Hong Kong quite often then. Sure brings back memories.. [flowerface]

Forgot which runway was this but my dad said the experience can be shocking from the window at night. You see the blackness of night and as the plane cleared the mountain, the city lights of HK just appeared out of nowhere scaring you.
