The W124 E class is a better bet in terms of reliability, affordability and ease of finding OEM parts. FC is around 8 to 9 km/L.

The W140 S class is around 5 to 6 km/L.

The current Merc W204 C280 (3L V6) is rated at 10.4 km/L. Actual could be anywhere 8-9 km/L new.

The Lexus IS200 (2L IL6) gave 7-8 km/L when new, in the first 3 years.

The BMW E83 X3 (2.5L IL6) pre-Valvtronic (non-SI) version gives 6-7 km/L when new, in the first 3 years. But that's on the other extreme of weight plus 4WD.

Given that the 1994 S280 is a near-20 year old 2.8L engine, and a much heavier S-Class chassis at that, I can hazard a guess of 5-6 km/L. Cannot be far wrong.
