Hi Buzz,

Can you roughly tell me how long is the journey in terms of distance and time taken to reach Cameron Highlands from Lake Kenyir? I am considering taking this route from Terrengnu to Ipoh, then down to KL. I read somewhere it takes around 7 to 8 hours on rugged terrains. Is it paved throughout?

i'm not Buzz, but share with u my experience.

just came back this Monday. yes! it about 6 to 7 hours. I set off from Cherating at 11 am. reach Cameron 5:30pm. distance is 400KM. track 8 and 1744 is bad. and lorries along the way, road condition is bad but ok for most car. i'm driving CS3 and still ok.

Supercharged

Help needed from those who have been to Kenyir.

From it's website, they have listed 2 routes.

Can I know which one is shorter?

Option 1: Singapore - Johor Bahru - Kota Tinggy(Johor) - Mersing(Johor) - Kuantan(Pahang) - Pekan(Pehang)

- Kuantan(Pahang) - Cherating(Pahang) - Dungun(Terengganu) - Ketengah Jaya(Terengganu) - Bukit Besi (Terengganu) - Ajil(Terengganu) - Kuala Berang(Terengganu) - Lake Kenyir Resort & Spa

Duration: Approximately 8 hours

Option 2: Singapore - Johor Bahru - Yong Peng(Johor) - Segamat(Johor) - Kuantan(Pahang) - Cherating(Pahang) -

Dungun(Terengganu) - Ketengah Jaya(Terengganu) - Bukit Besi(Terengganu) - Ajil(Terengganu) - Kuala Berang(Terengganu) - Lake Kenyir Resort & Spa

Duration: Approximately 8 hours

I am looking to go Lake Kenyir (4D/3N) and Malacca(2D/1N). Which one should I go first if I am gg to do back-to-back?

Lastly, can recommend good map cos I scared get lost gg to Lake Kenyir. Many thanks :)

If you have taken route 3 before from Singapore to Kuantan, then choose option 2.

Option 2: Singapore - Johor Bahru - Yong Peng(Johor) - Segamat(Johor) - Kuantan(Pahang). From Kuantan to Lake Kenyir, I find that T14 is better then T3 as there is less traffic lights - hence less start and stop.

Used a GPS during the trip, so if you are going without one. Suggest getting a good map or check on the go.

Option 2 should get you there in a shorter time but it is not as scenic as the coastal route.

Melaka can visit anytime, even on day trip, I would pick Kenyir and perhaps another location on the east coast (ie. Kuantan, Kijang, Cherating, even Kuala Terengganu) to maximize "returns" from the 8 hours drive. If you like the seas, you should consider a 2 nights stay in one of the many fabulous islands off Terengganu.

If die die must go Melaka, I will take route 3 up (Mersing) and route 12(Segamat) on the way back and detour north to Melaka. If you are going in late June, do stop by durian stalls near Segamat for the famous Segamat durians.

Slightly off topic but I've been told a few times now from durian sellers around Kluang and Melacca that Segamat is no longer the place for durians that it used to be.

Anyone confirm this.

I had the best 101 in Segamat, bought from a malay guy selling his super size 101 from a pick up truck (note I am not much of a 101 fan but it was heavenly), those I bought one from retail stores in Segamat are so so only. It really depends on your luck but I heard the best Segamat durians are exported to Singapore and China. Some say Penang durians are better, I am not sure but I understand a lot of the Segamat durian farms have been mowed down and replaced with oil palms, so there might be some truth to it, as old trees usually produce the best durians.

But it is good fun nonetheless to stop by the roadside to sample durians, during our last trip, we stopped more than 5 times and had to skip lunch. LOL.

I think you are referring to the above area. As you can see from my tracks i did not take the detour, the road is open. Maybe that's why the road is full of pot holes [laugh]

Be cautious of this stretch of road. I got my car immobilised back in 2007 and need to tow the car all the way back to Sg. Cost me MYR3000 to tow and replace car engine. Fortunately, my insurance pay out in full. The road along Kenyir was perfect until u enter the Kelantan state. It's such a great difference.
