Veryfree Clutched March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 Newton Hawker Ctr just came back to business totally revamped, err, but except for one thing.....bad reputation. recently, a few foreigners got sort of conned. http://travel.asiaone.com/Travel/News/Stor...318-129428.html does anyone have any bad experience? i heard of good food there, but wouldn't dare to recommend anyone after hearing such news. ↡ Advertisement
Snowblind Neutral Newbie March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 Don't really find the food great or anything considering the reputation. I believe most locals will not be conned as they know the price and the dishes sold.
Watwheels Supersonic March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 A few decades ago maybe the food there was good. And back then it's one of the few hawker centres which opens late into the night. Ppl have fond memories of it maybe till now.
Observer 4th Gear March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 Just went there over the weekend...they know we are locals so i guess prices was according to the menu shown to us...ok la...extra couple of dollars for each dish as compared to 85 or chomp chomp... You see...if we go overseas we do not go for the cheapest as we will not know where to find it..just like the ang mohs who will likely not to find chomp chomp or 85 around...since hotels located mainly centrally, newton circus is one of the most central they could find isnt it? =)

Watwheels Supersonic March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 Last time was quite common of people get into fighting after got drunk in Newton Hawker Centre. I think it's common anywhere that sells alcoholic drinks, not just NHC.

I still missed Whitley Hawker Centre (the one under Thomson Rd / Toa Payoh flyover) ..... food is cheap and good, not like NHC ......
Ixiz Clutched March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 Basically anything with fixed price at any hawker center should be safe . Eg - $1.00/$1.50 Sugar Cane, Chicken rice $3/$4 .. Mee Goreng $2.50/$3 Etc All the above should not have much dispute . . Those that normally goes by Weightage or listed as "Seaonal price".. Best is try to avoid . Eg - Durians , Prawn , Crabs etc . . Nothing beats the good old hawker centre at Koek Road, next to the old Cold Storage at Cuppage?
Rollagt 5th Gear March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 Sometimes I do go there for supper after movies coz its the only hawker centre ard town and open till late nite. I dun go for their BBQ food but order some simple dish like carrot cake, hokkien mee, chicken wings, popiah, fishball noodles etc they had pricing on their stall so wont kanna chop. If they chop me $8 for hokkien mee I will not pay. I call police. LOL

Ysc3 Twincharged March 19, 2009 Share March 19, 2009 so far, i have only went to Newtom hawker ctr once in my entire life - and that was during my secondary school excursion(20+ yrs ago) !! even then, i dun think i had anything there. i dunno why newton always makes it to travellers ears even with the bad publicity ?? i mean, even as a local, i dun like the place already, just after reading/hearing abt it. Richsg300 Neutral Newbie March 19, 2009 Share March 19, 2009 I would choose AH YEE seafood located at turf city to newton Hawker center seafood over any time.. Newton is hot, cramp with ppl and when u reach home u smell of oil and last but not least the seafood there is

Stary Supercharged March 19, 2009 Share March 19, 2009 The National Environment Agency has suspended Stall Number 43 - Tanglin Best BBQ Seafood at Newton Food Centre for three months for breaching licensing conditions. http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?t=2306784 No point. They just close the stall and open somewhere else using a different name. Sometimes these stalls also quite stupid. Ang moh doesn't mean they must be tourist. Singapore has so many FTs and PRs now, what make them think they can chop the ang mohs? Anyway, the only draw about Newton is the huge carpark available. Other food centres have tiny carparks or not very convenient. Look at chomp chomp, nice place, but freaking hard to find a carpark nearby during peak hours. ↡ Advertisement
