Blackyv Turbocharged March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 There is no need to curb the usage of dialects. It is part of our heritage and culture. We have to accept it. We should not encourage the use of Mandarin just because of its commercial advantage. What happen if it loses its economic advantage? Are we going to forsake our language? wonder will one day, old man suggest we screw the mandarin and go the tamil way.... and he will for a start, deliver his speech in tamil on national tv.,.. that's going to be funny.... Jacf Neutral Newbie March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 i think dialect is significant as it's wat differentiate the Chinese.. else all the dialect Huay Kwan(Clan) can close shops liao.. these are all part of our roots too.. when our ancestors first came to spore, they all formed the different dialect clans.. got Hokkien Huay Kwan, Teochew Huay Kwan.. and a no of schools are set up by these immigrants.. Mandarin is impt as it's help us to do dealings with China.. but not all PRCs speak mandarin too.. they got 1001 types of dialects passed down thousands of yrs ago.. lets not forget our roots - our ancestors' humble beginnings.. and our unique identity as Chinese. Gonococcus Neutral Newbie March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 singapore cannot afford to have dialects we have enough segregation as it is, amongst the different races do we really want to split up everyone even more by adopting dialects that other dialect groups dont understand? Shull Turbocharged March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 Having dialects does not mean having to split everyone up.. look at the chinese from malaysia..or to have a smaller group, KL..all of them come from different dialect group..most can speak chinese, malay, english, cantonese and their own dialect..but they are not as you say, 'splitted' right? All Singapore school teach in english..students from non-elite neighbourhood schools converse in Chinese.. so what's wrong with dialect?

Kusje Supersonic March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 (edited) let mi put it another way............person wif no idea wats he/she culture is, is a screwed person, imo Good for you then. I'm English educated and I indulge in American culture. I think people that blindly follow the culture they are born into are screwed up. Just because you're born a chinese doesn't mean you MUST like chinese; everyone has a choice. Edited March 18, 2009 by Kusje
Darth_mel 1st Gear March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 Another act of diversion from old fart to divert us from his daughter-in-law loss-making fiasco. After unsuccessfully dictate our sex lives, now he wanna dictate our rights of speaking dialects. Maybe his grandchildren didn't have the gift of learning many languages thus he thinks other people also incapable of doing so. Many of my Malaysian relatives can speak English, Chinese, Malay, Hokkien, Cantonese and Hakka with reasonable competence. And they didn't have gahmen interference at all. I mean, there's no need to fully learn dialects right? Basic conversational skills is enough. Btw, knowing multiple language is very useful. Quite a number of times, when i go up to Malaysia, the locals(malay) are friendlier to us if we use Malay to converse with them.
Sunlight 1st Gear March 19, 2009 Share March 19, 2009 (edited) why didnt the old man try to get rid of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry? like what he did to Nantah? SCCCI has representatives of all the dialects. What about the teochew clan that owns ngee ann city, ngee ann gongxi ?? they promote teochew.
