Dialect is a part of our distinct culture and heritage. It is who we are. I don't need no government [rifle] to tell me what I and my children can or can't speak to each other at home or outside.

There is no need to curb the usage of dialects. It is part of our heritage and culture. We have to accept it.

We should not encourage the use of Mandarin just because of its commercial advantage. What happen if it loses its economic advantage? Are we going to forsake our language?

wonder will one day, old man suggest we screw the mandarin and go the tamil way.... and he will for a start, deliver his speech in tamil on national tv.,.. that's going to be funny.... [:p]

fully agree..... really sickening to hear someone trying to tell me what dialect i should communicate at home...... if situation and environment permits, i will want my son to learn canto, hakka, hainanese, hokkien, and teochew besides mandarin.... :D

i think dialect is significant as it's wat differentiate the Chinese.. else all the dialect Huay Kwan(Clan) can close shops liao.. these are all part of our roots too.. when our ancestors first came to spore, they all formed the different dialect clans.. got Hokkien Huay Kwan, Teochew Huay Kwan.. and a no of schools are set up by these immigrants..

Mandarin is impt as it's help us to do dealings with China.. but not all PRCs speak mandarin too.. they got 1001 types of dialects passed down thousands of yrs ago..

lets not forget our roots - our ancestors' humble beginnings.. and our unique identity as Chinese.

singapore cannot afford to have dialects

we have enough segregation as it is, amongst the different races

do we really want to split up everyone even more by adopting dialects that other dialect groups dont understand?

Having dialects does not mean having to split everyone up..

look at the chinese from malaysia..or to have a smaller group, KL..all of them come from different dialect group..most can speak chinese, malay, english, cantonese and their own dialect..but they are not as you say, 'splitted' right?

All Singapore school teach in english..students from non-elite neighbourhood schools converse in Chinese..

so what's wrong with dialect?

a large majority of singaporeans can't even express themselves in english, simply because they're too used to conversing in their dialects

lee kuan yew is right, theres not enough brainpower for everyone to master english, 2nd language AND a dialect

among the 3, it's obvious which one should be sacrificed

let mi put it another way............person wif no idea wats he/she culture is, is a screwed person, imo [:|]

Good for you then. I'm English educated and I indulge in American culture.

I think people that blindly follow the culture they are born into are screwed up. Just because you're born a chinese doesn't mean you MUST like chinese; everyone has a choice.

Another act of diversion from old fart to divert us from his daughter-in-law loss-making fiasco.

After unsuccessfully dictate our sex lives, now he wanna dictate our rights of speaking dialects.

Maybe his grandchildren didn't have the gift of learning many languages thus he thinks other people also incapable of doing so.

Many of my Malaysian relatives can speak English, Chinese, Malay, Hokkien, Cantonese and Hakka with reasonable competence.

And they didn't have gahmen interference at all.

it's not because of 'not enough brainpower'..many are simply bo chup(don't care) to learn..

my dad can speak english, chinese, cantonese, hokkien, hainanese, indonesian and malay..

my relatives in malaysia can speak english, chinese, cantonese, hainanese and malay..

i know how to speak english, chinese and malay

all fluently..

it's not because of brainpower..it's up to the individual will to learn..

a master of 1 trade is more useful than a jack of all trades

similarly, whats the use of being able to ask 'have you eaten dinner' in 10 languages if one can't write higher level essays or partake in intellectual debate in even one of them?

pick a language, then master it well

in singapore, english is overwhelmingly more important than the rest. any other language and you lose out on communicating to various racial groups

It's possible to master 1 or 2 language..and still being able to converse well in others. I mean, there's no need to fully learn dialects right? Basic conversational skills is enough.

Btw, knowing multiple language is very useful. Quite a number of times, when i go up to Malaysia, the locals(malay) are friendlier to us if we use Malay to converse with them.

why didnt the old man try to get rid of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry? like what he did to Nantah? SCCCI has representatives of all the dialects. What about the teochew clan that owns ngee ann city, ngee ann gongxi ?? they promote teochew.
