Pcslim Neutral Newbie March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 funny that old man didn't compare SG to HK.. younger HKers can speak fluent canto and mandarin. And they still can converse in english without much problem. Why can't we be like them? or is it SGporean are less intelligent than HKers? KL lagi better.. English, Mandarin, Canto and Malay.. Our neighbour up north seem to embrace dialects and the chinese culture much more than we do, despite being the minority. Almost all my young nephews/nieces there can speak dialect so well that put myself to shame. ↡ Advertisement

Blackyv Turbocharged March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 one thing i find it amusing...old man has been singing about speak mandarin for donkey years, keep emphasizing the important of it and keep discouraging dialects, but hey, he himself said out of 7 grandchildren, only one like/speaks mandarin... so, he is telling us even he himself fail to instill what he has been preaching all these years down his family tree?? ..... ....err.. tell him what..., im from Cantonese speaking family background and sometimes, ashamed that being a hainanese, i cant speak hainanese and i fail to learn how to speak Hakka (but i can understand though..) from my grandmum whe i was young but my elder bro did learn hakka... so, i will speak cantonese with my 2yrs old son (after i realize recently that he may not pick it up if he grow older since my wife and i has been communicating with him in mandaring/english.. wife cant speak cantonese...and i dont want him to lose this dialect....).... i have so many relatives up north who can speak easily 2-3 dialects and they do not have problem socializing, working and communicating, even with taiwanese and prc.... ... i dont really understand the logic that we have limited "hdd" space for more languages.... Bro im in a worse situation man my family is teochew speaking. I learn canto from my grandma since i was a baby boy and now my canto surpass my teochew. I don't hang out with teochew people like so much. Furthermore, my bestfriend speaks hokkien. So my Hokkien automatically goes up. But my parents have this weird connotatio nthat Hokkien is for ahbengs and thus discourages me from speaking hokkien. Its so weird. When i wanna learn dialect, they stop me. Sigh. Albeniz Turbocharged March 18, 2009 Share March 18, 2009 There is no need to curb the usage of dialects. It is part of our heritage and culture. We have to accept it. We should not encourage the use of Mandarin just because of its commercial advantage. What happen if it loses its economic advantage? Are we going to forsake our language?
