this thingy is very very 'pandang'. it was immediate repairs, just hours after the lighting - I have never seen such super efficiency....the last was years ago when Lao Pat Sat's top clock was struck.....it also took less than 1/2 that activated full repair...............guess what year was that???

another crisis year for the lion city also....

This incident is purely the professional consultants negligence. Being in the building consultancy field myself, the rule of thumb in determining if lightning conductor is required on a structure (in this case the Merlion) is whether the latter is within 45 degrees coverage from the nearest building's roof lightning conductor.

The picture in the Straits Times on 03 Mar 2009 showed that the nearest lightning conductor is at the roof of The One Fullerton building which is 50m away from the Merlion. The lightning protection coverage from The One Fullerton building is only 15.5m and the remaining 34.5m is totally unprotected and exposed to any lightning strike.

Without any prejudice whatsoever, our professional building consultants still lack lots of building knowledge. If putting a lightning conductor rod on the head of the Merlion is unsightly either from the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board or the consultants viewpoint, thre are many solutions to prevent such incident to happen.

One solution that the consultants could have done was to provide an aesthetically designed long vertical lightning conductor pole and attach it at the top of the nearest walkway lamp post such that the 45 degrees lightning protection coverage spans slightly beyond the Merlion.

The other solution was to install a long vertical lightning conductor pole at The One Fullerton building rooftop.

The above are simple measures and yet can be overlooked by the consultants.

somehow I got a feeling that even with a lighting rod in place, the lightning will still strike the Merlion.

It is destiny.

May be the merlion needs a new look. A lightning conductor can be aesthetically installed on the head and transform it to become the new symbol that all Singaporeans will be proud of: The Unicorn Merlion! This will eliminate future lightning strike and at the same time bring in more tourists.... [bounce2]

connect the horn of the new unicorn merlion to our electrical grid. Hopefully being such a mythical creature, it will attract all kinds of strikes every storm and generate a whole lot of power for singpower!

typical replies (so far) from garmen and its agencies when things go wrong :

- honest mistake ...

- it was outsourced, blame the counterparty or supplier for faulty parts / poor workmanship ...

- we should be "thankful" ...

- its a long term investment ...

- notwithstanding the losses, we have still outperformed the markets in the long run ...

some of them should read Prof Tommy Koh's article in yesterday's Straits Times, that was well written.

be humble. be honest.

Hopefully I will get rich if more pushcart sellers start to sell Unicorn Merlion T-shirts or souvenirs [:p] Remember, I got the copyright. Keep on dreaming... [sleeping]

heard once some tibet 高人said before... the old man cannot die... or there will be chaos... [sweatdrop]

imho, at least should wait until the kiddo consolidate/strengthen his power within the group first...

Mmm....replacement of the head also indicates that there will be shuffle in the top management in the MIW group. Kiddo desparately needs mandate from the people that have been waken up by the lightning as they could see "clearly" now according to several renown Fengshui Masters. The worst has yet to come so kiddo is defending hard otherwise might lose the helm. Old man is weak at the moment so he must take care of his health as the no. 1 priority. YMMV.
