Application9999 Clutched February 22, 2009 Share February 22, 2009 The application work on GPRS or internet connection. So it is not a point to point GP.
Ekardo Clutched February 22, 2009 Author Share February 22, 2009 apart from the medium (be it more expensive or what), is it usable for guiding the driver?
Thug Clutched February 22, 2009 Share February 22, 2009 Hmmm...i use it. So far I find it useful. One thing is...I would use it at home for I'm using wifi at home. Load up the place I'm going then use it outside. So no loading outside. If I'm already outside and need to find somewhere, I'll use my street directory. Using outside is expensive...especially u r wif singtel that have no cap on its GPRS. The latest version adds on a new feature. A blue ball showing ur position. No voice saying "turn left or right" though.
Circuit Clutched February 22, 2009 Share February 22, 2009 (edited) I at times use. But using my wireless broadband sim card from starhub. My per mth unlimited is 19+ bucks. But data plan. Can't SMS or call. Thus have another basic phone (singtel line) just for calling and SMS. My iPhone become my outdoor Internet tool and PDA Liao. Pls dun use singtel normal contract phone line to surf, I learnt the hard way, 200+Mb = $200+ . Edited February 22, 2009 by Circuit

Tjkbeluga 5th Gear February 23, 2009 Share February 23, 2009 iPhone has no preloaded maps. Therefore, i requires internet access to download the maps. As such, iPhone's GPS is the crappiest GPS around. However, recently I do encounter jailbroken applications that behaves exactly like a conventional GPS. It's only US version though. Not available here.
Chickenbackside 1st Gear February 23, 2009 Share February 23, 2009 Not really answering your question, but I recently installed Garmin software on my Nokia E71, and all I can say is, I took out my Garmin Nuvi from my car permanently. It is simply OUTSTANDING.
Terence_oh Neutral Newbie February 23, 2009 Share February 23, 2009 iPhone does not have a real GPS receiver onboard - only aGPS which uses GPRS data downloads and cell location to 'guess' your physical location with a pretty large room for error. In other words, you shouldn't depend on it for driving. Try buying other phones with GPS receivers.

Novicej Neutral Newbie February 23, 2009 Share February 23, 2009 What do you mean by real or fake gps? Iphone 2g don't have a gps inbuilt. It make use of ip address access point to locate you. The iphone3g gps is a real hardware. It is similar to other gps. The difference why iphone 3g don't work like gamin or mapking is because there is no offline google map. gamin and mapking are offline maps so device such as windows mobile loads the map as you drive. Iphone 3g connects gprs to take the map data online.

In what way does an iPhone 3G does not have a real GPS receiver? As Novicej mentioned, what iPhone 3G lack is not the hardware, but the software, as in there is no maps stored on the phone and there is no turn-by-turn navigation SW. Loneranger Neutral Newbie February 23, 2009 Share February 23, 2009 Iphone 3G does have a GPS receiver but since they currently only allow use (SG) with google map, 3G network or GPRS is required. For iphone 3g user out there (jailbroken), you can DL offline maps from cydia and then proceed to DL SG maps. The whole of SG map will be loaded into your google maps, so you can use it while driving without spending a cent on GPRS charges. For turn by turn instruction, you can try xgps also thru cydia.
