Which Japanese executive sedan is your pick?

Hi all,

 

After some windows shopping and test driving of entry level and larger conti cars, I don't find them necessary more superior in every department. In addition, some of the models that I prefer and is willing to spend are 10 years old model. Even one is rumoured to be taken over by the China car manufacturer. It looks like I'm back to the Japanese executive car market again. I wanted bigger space and decent performance. Still prefer NA than TC though NA heavier on road tax. The below are what I've gathered:

 

For Performance:

Approximately

Honda Accord/Inspire IL-4, 2354cc > 180bhp/6500, 220 Nm/4300, 1550 kg

Mazda 6 IL-4, 2488cc > 169bhp/6500, 220 Nm/4000, 1430 Kg

Nissan Teana V6, 2496cc > 182bhp/6000, 220 Nm/4400, 1531 Kg

Toyota Camry IL-4, 2362cc > 167bhp/6000, 220 Nm/4000, 1540 Kg

 

For Dimension:

Honda Accord/Inspire > 4945L X 1475H X 1845W. Wheelbase is 2800.

Mazda 6 > 4720L X 1440H X 1785W. Wheelbase is 2725.

Nissan Teana > 4850L X 1485H X 1795W. Wheelbase is 2775.

Toyota Camry > 4825L X 1470H X 1820W. Wheelbase is 2775.

 

Their turning radius are about the same.

 

My personal feel in brief:

a) Handling and driving dynamism. Accord and Mazda 6 are both competent. Both have double wishbones suspension. Lower profile and bigger set of tyres help them too.

b) Road noise level and comfort. Teana is clear winner. But Accord is not too far behind. Anyway, I don't like soft seats.

c) interior refinement, including equipment level and features. Still like the clean and sharp Honda Design but equipment level not as high. Mazda 6 is also hype.

d) power delivery, especially from 100Km/h to 140Km/h. Honda still excel. I like the paddle shift but missing the S mode. Teana CVT is rough at higher speed but delivery is smooth from pick-up. The others are just softer in power delivery.

e) Driver at this class, generally is not concern about availability of accessories, including aftermarkets ARB, struct bars and etc. Honda and Mazda should have no issue if want to do legal modification.

f) Fuel consumption. Can't tell. This one really need input from the existing owner. I'm hopping to get 10Km/l.

g) The look. Again subjective. I would say Mazda 6 is a winner but it has the smallest cabin size among the rest here. Accord is let down by the frontal look but can be rectified with aftermarket front grille. For Camry and Teana is a matter of like it or hate it.

 

The best combination would be Mazda look with Accord size and performance . Anyway. if no clear winner then have to sit back and wait for new facelift or new model to come in. Hopefully by then have promising conti model at good price . The next in line, should be the "look long" Skoda Superb.

Power wise, the accord win hands down but come to looks, mazda 6 is a clear winner imho.

 

I heard that mazda is coming out with a new 6 this year. Nothing much has change except that it's wheelbase is gonna be longer. But i think that means sacrificing on the boot size.

The FC for Mazda6 is about 10-11km/l. This is from mazda club forummers.

 

Anyway, i'm driving a mazda 6 (2000cc). <--- must clarify before i get flame for praising own car. haha.

where u get this info there will be new 6? got any spy shots? i only know that new 6 will have higher omv.

So fast go new 6 already?

 

Do you find the power delivery a bit soft for pickup and acceleration for the Mazda 6? I'm used to driving my current FD2 so I thought it doesn't have the punch that I'm hoping to see. Would there be any power enhancement for the new 6?

 

Mazda 6 being the lightest among the 4 here, should have a better figure in fuel economy. I used alot of paddle shifting and S-mode in my current car and I'm getting around 10.5km/h so I'm hope to see a 10 .

I wonder have u consider on your passenger? I've occasionally personally driven customer around, so I think cabin space is another critical consideration for excutive sedan. So far Camry's space is good as I did took 3 more than 1.9m tall Angmos with me and they were OK on the Camry. I

I don't like the design on the door handle for Camry which makes it difficult to close the door when you are in the cabin. Door handle is simply too close to the hinge.

 

While I like the styling for M6, I think I would not get it because for the engine capacity the cabin space it a little small compare to the rest here.

 

Camry is getting old too, which left me 2 choice, Accord or Teana. Not seen the Teana except external look so nothing to comment.

i use quite a lot of paddle shifting too. somehow, i feel that it actually improves the FC. some guys in mazda forum said the same thing too.

 

My own 6 is giving me 11km/l. I'm using esso 95.

Tried 98 and i got only 9.5km/l. Caltex platinum gives me 11km/l too. will e trying shell soon.

 

pickup is definitely a bit soft here. but as i was driving a 1.5l car before this, i'm quite happy with it so far.

Without looking into the price, it would be either Camry or Accord. So it boils down to choice of Brand.

It has to be either mazda 6 or camry for me because i just can't swallow the look of accord and teena no matter how hard i try.

 

but for you, since u can still take the look of the accord then go for it

 

Teena is a good car IMO, very refine, comfortable and well equipped, but u must first like the outlook first

 

camry, very nice too, but it is as many as taxi on the road

 

mazda 6 is too small, so small that it will not feel any bigger than ur current FD

 

but since u like to drive ur FD hard, u will not go wrong with the 6 either, try to corner hard on all 4 above on ur next test drive

 

mazda 6 with the same wheelbase as accord does exist, but only in US, and they can even opt for v6 3.7 liters there

 

u can read about the comparison here, but only for US market.

 

And if my memory serves me right mazda 6, thought being the smallest in the group, has got the biggest boot space. or am i mis-informed? i don't have the boot space capacity figures now so i can be wrong...
