Sianz [bigcry] , despite all the planning (white cards, driving instruction from Karpi, RM cash) have to postpone to next weekend becos this weekend is still CNY. This weekend will go to Fassler for frozen fish instead [:|] . Next weekend will chiong Pontian Kecil.

Just came back from JB. It looks like it is 5KG per person. If you have say 4 in a car, you can go buy 20KG [thumbsup].

1. yeah...+/-an hour.

Since already there, food which u might want to try: -

a. infamous wanton mee (shop name Heng Heng, aka Xing Xing in chinese)

but this i don't know how to direct, so sorry.

heng heng is just next to a car accessories shop. forgot the name of that shop but it's very prominent. You can see the shop at the left as you approach a junction with 2 consecutive traffic lights.

there's also another heng heng but that one difficult to give directions.

I'm back from Pontian Kerchil Fish Market [:)]

Overall experience is below average.

Except for the 2nd Link, the road condition was bad. It is winding, uneven and full of pot holes. Most of time I was driving below 60kmh and busy applying brake or avoiding pot Nothing exciting, the Giant supermart is very small when compared to those in JB. Weather is hot and somehow the smell of the sea is everywhere.

However driving to Pontian Kercil is easy because there are plenty of signboards to point you to the right direction.

Didn't manage to find the Heng Heng wonton mee, ate the Siang Heng wonton noodle shop close the fish market. RM3.50 for a small bowl but it was quite tasty. The boss was very friendly and chatty.

The fish market is known Pasar Awam (translated to public market). There are plently car park lots. Although it requires display of parking coupon but nobody cares. The market has 4 sections but it is not big. The first section is for vege, 2nd section for seafood (fish, prawn, etc), 3rd section is for meat and 4th section is for wholeseller of seafood. At noon when the fishes arrived at 4th section, the fish mongers in 2nd section will to bid/buy in bulk and resell it to public.

I was wrong about the price. It is not as cheap as I tot. It is probably about 5%-10% than Singapore. However it is truely fresh. So unless you are buying RM500 and above, it is not worth the savings from price difference.

I bought 2kg of XL size prawn at RM55 per kg. In 1 kg, there are 13 prawns, so you can roughly know what I meant by XL size.

Would I go again? Probably not.

For those who want to give it a try, here is the route that I took. I went by 2nd link (Tuas) and reseted the trip meter after clearing Malaysia immigration.

a. Cleared Malaysia Immgration at 2nd link (0 km)

b. At Exit 312D Gelang Patah, turn left to exit (6.5 km)

c. At T-junction, turn left into Jln Gelang Patah J4 (9.4 km)

d. At cross-junction, turn right into Jln Choh J7 (10.5 km)

e. You will notice a temple on your right (20.5km)

f. At cross-junction, follow the sign board to Pontian, turn left into Lebuhraya Skudai-Pontian (21.6km)

g. Drive straight toward Pontian, reach Pekan Nenas (27.3 km)

h. At cross-junction, follow the signboard to Kukup, turn left (44.6km)

i. Fish Market is on your right, 50m after the turn, exactly opposite the Moon Light Cafe.

Nice write up and pictures. Did you pop by Kukup?

On price, it used to be a lot cheaper (ie. 5 years ago, according to my relative). Prices started to head north as more Singaporeans buy by the truckloads without much hard bargaining. It is demand and supply.

Anyway, the seafood are really fresh. I place orders almost every month and the taste (ie. freshness) never disappoint. [thumbsup]

Just curious, which mean you go up there almost every month to buy seafood? What are the fishes that you think are the good buy there?

Thanks for the FR [thumbsup].

That place does look small, quite different from hearsay. Did you see any exotic species there? RM$55, that is steep compare with the Tiger prawn of around RM2X in Jusco supermarket. Of course, like you have said yours is a XL size and fresh. Roughly how big is the body of a XL prawn excluding the head?

I don't go up there every month but a relative does, I was there once in the last 3 years. I usually piggyback on their purchases. Usual buys: prawns, squid, promfret, ikan parang or saitoh, snapper, Kunleng etc.... The prawns are a must buy, imo.

I think it would not be fair to compare the seafood from Pontian to those at Jusco. Seafood purchased from supermarkets usually don't have that natural sweetness (ie. taste sweet steamed with a little seasoning and sauce). I however have to admit I am a little bit more discerning when it comes to fishes and prawns.

The seafood at Pontian come straight to the market from the fishing trawlers and/or kelongs, loads of them arrive at the market still alive and flipping. Maybe it is the fishing grounds where they come from. Of course you can get such seafood in Singapore as well but prices are a lot more than the 5-10% difference observed by TS.

dont look that fresh also

fish on table without ice [shakehead]

No ice becos they are still setting up the store. You can't tell the freshness unless I took a zoom in shot. BTW, the pictures were scaled down from a few megs in size to 87k.

Hmm..travelling 140km +20+(from home to tuas) for seafood at 5-10% cheaper now doesnt appeal to me much.

Previously was interested to go..:(

Even if it is 20% cheaper it is still not worth the trip. Driving at less than 60kmh, slamming brake before hump (plenty of them) and navigating to avoid pot holes are never fun. The only portion of trip which I go beyond 110kmh is the short distance on 2nd link (E3). THe actual distance is 45km (1-way from tuas), but the time taken is can almost reaching Melaka.

It is not bad place. Good for short excursion to enjoy the kampung feeling and on the to kukup.

Is the road condition that bad? i only remember the road condition from the exit of the highway to the T-junction joining the main highway to Pontian is bad. After that it's not that serious. In fact it's really a lot better than a year before.

As for the time taken, it depends on the traffic in front and if you enjoy overtaking in a single lane highway.

Glad you managed to find your way there and cool report man. [:)]

Thanks for the pictures.

I went to pontian last sat too. Back on sunday.

But this time i go by woodlands, and got caught in the jam at JB custom and after custom.

Forgot they were doing "游神" i think.

potholes maybe about 2-3 throughout the whole journey. majority

is from the road after Gelang Patah. Not so bad, actually. I quite

like to cruise along the road after turning left from the temple.
