Lets analyze the car sales market 2009

Based on my observation, when markert underperformed or during a market slowdown, Korean cars typically sell well. Remember the period where you see influx of Matrix and Sonata on the road? This accounts for their existence in the Top places in car sales chart. On the other hand When market is generally doing well, you see less of them and their sales actually tumbled. At high time, PIs flushished with the sales of more Japanese imports and someone came out to condem the existence of PIs in Singapore.

The black horse, the Made in China, also once claimed to sell 100 QQ on a single day. This is a period where we see more ERPs, road tax reduction, rebate for CNG car, increasing quota and increase in car demand.

With recession and less jobs going around the market, are we seeing a repeat of Korean cars coming to top the chart? On the other hand, MIC, which is partially affected by the notorious poison milk case, might have shaken consumer confidence. Hence, unlikly to fight the Korean. Potential MIC buyers are cost concious lot hence may probably give up the idea and stick to BMW for now.

For the premium sector, typically represented by high-end conti brands, we are seeing a trend of ADs offering overtrade package to attract the buyers. With COE at it all times low, are we seeing more rich people changing to even newer conti?

In all due regards, this has never been a better time for 1st time car buyers and those who are not currently holding onto an existing car. Again with Banks becoming more concious in car loan, this may keep the purchases at bay.

What do you think?

Thank you.

Regards,

I was at BM to test drive Altis and later walked over to Komoco to test Avante over lunch time. This scene surprises me and contradict what you mention.

BM salesman (1st time meeting) was so busy answering phone calls during the test drive. I asked him if he had time to urine. He shake his head. Mentioned something like a thousand bookings since last COE bid. The showroom was not packed full. Every showroom vehicle is being viewed by potential customers while some are standing talking to SE.

Walked over to Komoco, surprise to see only myself in the showroom, after 10 mins of helping myself viewing the showroom vehicles, no SE attended to me. Some SE was on the line phone, some doing sms, some looking around like I am transparent.

This is the scene. Your conclusion? [lipsrsealed]

Erm..hard to comment base on this micro scenario. We see Toyota typically top the sales chart year after year. In a bad time, perhaps we see less in term of volume but they should still top the chart in year 2009. Remember we once discussed about herd mentality that is hard to be shaken, not only in Singapore but also the rest of the Asian countries beside Korea.

There are 2 scenerios in Herd Mentality.

a) Stupid people just following the Herd or

b) Smart people thinks alike

This is subjective. Lets stick to our topic. Thank you.

If you guys want to flame me for saying what I have seen with my very own eyes. I can't stop it.

In fact, I also had the same thought as Kelpie before I walked over to Komoco. There must be many viewers in the showroom and have to wait long time for test drive. Surprise, surprise. [flowerface]

In fact, I think there are still a lot of people who have really been affected by the downturn...except hearing and reading from the media or friends.

Also, Hyundai is no longer that cheap (compared to the last downturn). Toyota and some Honda (those made in Thailand) are also more affordable now.

This is just the beginning of the year. It's too early to say which make will have increased sales. We will have to wait till next year to see the results.

So early how to analyze??? [confused]

I feel some thing will be fairly certain.

1) Car sales will be slow,

2) Budget car will sell better in bad times.

What should the price range of "Budget" cars?

We are only at the start of the recession... The light at the end of the tunnel is not even in sight yet...

There are a lot of hopeful people who think their jobs are safe or govt servants with iron rice bowls whom has taken their bonuses recently...

Until this pool of customers are exhausted, we would not see any reduction of AD margins...
