Sony 1st Gear January 28, 2009 Share January 28, 2009 If you have more than 1 stick of ram, try taking all except one out and see what happen.. then replace them one by one. I presume all the ram are of the same size.. ↡ Advertisement
Mazdaowner Moderator January 28, 2009 Share January 28, 2009 My home use PC has finally die on me on chinese new year eve. It's a 6 years old compaq presario and mainly use for surfing the internet by the family and some simple microsoft word . I guess the hard disk has crashed. The moment I on the power , it will show me the pink color compaq page with option to "F1 - RESET F10 ...."can't remember , and then it will emit a continuous high pitch alarm sound... Repairing it I think will be beyond economical repair . A friend of mine was telling me to get those pre-assemble pc from simlim , a shop call videopro , and then a colleague of mine was recommending me the apple i-mac which he say willbe cheaper if I can produce my son student pass and they will give a 10~15% discount . By the way I'm using starhub broadband and my budget is around 1K . So what you guys think or suggest ? Bro. 1. Clean the RAMs, take out, brush a bit, use rubber to clean the contacts and plug in again 2. Change new HDD, now very cheap. 3. Buy a Compaq CPU only, since your monitor is still working. Less then $700 bucks. Everything swee, swee, pre-loaded. 4. Laptop if you want, less the $1k can get a Compaq. Save the $$ for something else if you can, if really bo pian, all other options are there. HDD change out is still the cheapest, if HDD got problems. RAM if screwed up, can get them changed/replaced, lifetime warranty on some brands.
Galantspeedz Turbocharged January 28, 2009 Share January 28, 2009 At the point of time, it seems the best deal to me... taking into consideration of the samsung monitor and specs of the com and chinese software.

Babyckh 5th Gear January 28, 2009 Share January 28, 2009 If you intend to replace some ram, do take note that the ram that you are using had already obsolete or it is going to cost you. Best is to bring the ram along to SLS in case you got the wrong type.

Contax 1st Gear January 28, 2009 Author Share January 28, 2009 where is the RAM usually located? Sorry I'm a newbie to this You think I can/should try to pull out the RAM ,clean the contact with rubber and put it back again ?
Contax 1st Gear January 28, 2009 Author Share January 28, 2009 I have differing opinions.. if you are not on-the-move type of guy, a desktop is better with bigger HDD, ram and processor.. and you will get bigger viewable screen as well. but if you want to move ard, then add in another $300 or more to get another netbook for the move.. it's cheaper than a Ipod Touch.. I'll stay with the desktop as I'm also planning to upgrade to a 20'' LCD screen from my current 15'' LCD.

Contax 1st Gear January 28, 2009 Author Share January 28, 2009 I bought a lenovo PC, just the tower, Intel pentium dual core 2.5Ghz, 2GB Ram, 250GB HDD, chinese software, etc for about $700 Then bought a samsung 19" LCD monitor for $239 and Evo 8 speakers for $60+. It also comes with wireless keyboard and mouse and webcam and windows vista. So it is almost like a laptop. Total about $1k Bought at challenger Simei. Take note, the tower itself cost more at parkway challenger. I don't know why. I think it was a good deal. I bought it about 1-2mths ago I bought my current PC from challanger Funan ctr abt 6 years ago....maybe it's time I revisit them again and look see look see. Sorry I'm a newbie to this You think I can/should try to pull out the RAM ,clean the contact with rubber and put it back again ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAM 1st, you know to know how ram look like.. it's a long strip of chips, doesn't look like sheep.. 2nd, you need to know how to open the casing to your CPU. 3rd, get ready a vacuum cleaner if you never open the CPU before.. sure got plenty of dust in there.. 4th, if you got more than 1 pcs of ram, remove one 1st, then try to power on your PC. take from the outer slot 1st.. not the 1st slot..
