True Buddhisims don't even eat meat at all....

Sadly, many people get confused over Toaism and Buddhisim. These 2 are totally different religions.

Buddhisms only have one Buddha.

Toaisms got all sorts of 1001 deities.

i also dunno.. went to a burmese temple @ ah hood road before.. there's a huge buddha in the main hall, and some smaller ones everywhere else.. are they bodhistavas, or other lesser buddhas? surely the burmese monks aren't taoist right?

Neutral Newbie

From what I know, people who worship GuanYin don't take beef because, cow has done alot for humans, farming and milking. If we still eat them then it will be very cruel.

I do agree with you on this, but nowadays, cows are also breed just for their meat, and do no farming anymore,

unlike before.

I actually asked a monk and he said that "not eating beef" has nothing to do with Buddhism at all and actually is a chinese culture stem from farmers.. because cow help farmers with their farming so in order to protect the cows they dont eat beef.. is this true??

I have a version which I heard from old folks : Buddhist do not eat beef because, the cow give milk to feed your children, so one do not kill the cow who helps your children grow.

Same for 'Star fruits' - saying goes like this:- that GuangYin was seating under the star fruit tree chanting and get enlightenment.

And another kind of meat which buddhist usually don't eat is turtle meat. This is according to tales of sailors from sunken ship were kept afloat (alive) by giant turtle on its back at sea...... [rolleyes][rolleyes]

Saw a oldskool series show when I was young.

Here's the summery of why most Buddhist or Guan Yin believer don't eat meat.

Guan Yin was once a man and a prince.

King was an evil person.

In order not to follow his dad's (the king) foot step,

Guan Yin decided to seek forgiveness and nirvana,

God knows about Guan Yin and started to test him,

On his (Guan Yin) journey, he met a pregnant lady and was bout to give birth,

Man is not allowed to help a woman deliver.

So Guan Yin asked God to change him into a woman so he can help deliver.

So Guan Yin is now a woman and is allowed to help the pregnant woman.

Along the journey, God wanted test her again and made her enter the 18 levels of Hell.

Seeing so many hungry n desperate ghost, she cut out both her hands to let the hungry ghost in hell to eat so they won't be hungry.

God seeing her being so helpful, God gave her a thousand hand. (Qian Shou Guan Yin)

Again, God saw her being such a merciful person, God will not punish his? her? dad and he will not be send to 18levels of hell.

Instead, God reincarnate her?his? dad into a cow. But when will he be a cow? No one knows ...

So people who worship Guan Yin. They're not supposed to eat Beef cos one might be her?his? father .. the evil king.

This was from a oldskool show .. so don't flame me .. sounds ridiculous ... heheee~ i know ..

i think the one you watched was probably heavily influenced by chinese tradition. Not really a right depiction based on Buddhism.

Buddhism is an ancient religion that originated in india...

Cow is considered holy & scared...

Buddhists believe in "mercy" and "karma". Meat eating involves killing...

Thats not all, super "on" Buddhists even refrain from eating onion, garlic and leeks as they are said to increase both sexual desire and anger...
