Carfan Neutral Newbie December 21, 2008 Share December 21, 2008 Just came back from Hong Kong. The MTR (equiv to our MRT) experience though very congested most of the time, was a pleasant one. Of ALL the trips where we stood close to the seats, there were kind souls who offered us their seats when they saw me/my wife carrying my 2.5 year old boy with our elder 5 year old boy standing beside. I also witnessed such kind gesture being extended to older folks by the working class people, all without hesitation, without pretences (e.g. suddenly go to sleep). I wonder how long it will take Singaporeans to be as gracious as them.. ↡ Advertisement

Bicolor 5th Gear December 21, 2008 Share December 21, 2008 Haha, bus uncle was an exceptional case. But indeed I don't see such graciousness all the time - not that there aren't some kind, well-mannered individuals, just as you can't say ALL Singaporeans are totally lacking in courtesy. But I wonder how come there have been so many people claiming that HKers are much more gracious on trains and buses these couple of days. Has HK changed so much within these couple of days I have been away? I often get strange looks from others and profuse thanks from those I give up my seats to, as if it is so unexpected. I'll only be going back in February, and I'll see whether people have changed overnight then! I still think its more of pure chance that these people have been meeting kind people. An incident posted on Youtube was even more ridiculous than the whole bus uncle thing - a young man refused to move his briefcase or laptop (can't remember which) to let an old man sit, and even called the police about the old man harassing him! What was equally disgusting was that people jeered at him but no one even thought of giving up their own seat. Have to say that HK drivers are on the whole more gracious however. Throttle2 Supersonic December 21, 2008 Share December 21, 2008 exactly, in Singapore also got kind people. in HK also got very rude people. every family has its black sheep.
Galantspeedz Turbocharged December 21, 2008 Share December 21, 2008 i believe alot people also forgot about the hk gangster slapping the hk police face also. as for drivers, i would say as compared to last time i think we in SG are improving in basic courtesy maybe we are not there yet but we are improving. Sparks Neutral Newbie December 21, 2008 Share December 21, 2008 That is so nice of them. But I guess every country will have black sheeps, just so happen we always see gracious people in other country rather than the ugly ones.
Unltd 5th Gear December 21, 2008 Share December 21, 2008 Well... depends on what train you take and what time, alot of Japanese actually take naps in the train so it is polite to not talk. My Japanese ex colleague actually shushed me when taking train in Japan and explained it is impolite to talk on the phone or to talk loudly in the train in Japan. From there I learnt the reason why sometimes I call Japanese they softly tell me cannot talk as they are taking the train.... Maybe you were too loud
Davidklt 6th Gear December 21, 2008 Share December 21, 2008 Try Taipei. its alot more gracious than SG and HK. One incident i remembered. i was with a taiwanese friend on board the train. An ah mah stepped in. Easily 4 passengers tried to give their seats to her.
