Kompressor: Discuss the benefits and disadvantages.

Hey forum mates,

E200 Kompressor is actually a 1800cc engine churning out a respectable 184bhp.

this figure is even higher than honda's 2.0litre civic Si engine and BMW 523's 176bhp engine(2500cc).

1) I realized that the word Kompressor is only written on E200. Does that mean that variants like the previous E240, E230 don't have the Kompressor feature?

2) Everything else, for instance, servicing interval, durability, remains the same as a normal engine, so does that mean that this is the future of engines especially in SG context where road tax is based on engine capacity? What are the disadvantages?

3) Mind sharing how the Kompressor function works in layman terms? Does it behave like a supercharger?

Thanks

1/3) Yes, it has a Inline-4 supercharger. Nope, the rest u mentioned r V6s.

2) I think these qns r self-explanatory once we confirm tat its a supercharged engine rite?

Personally, I find e supercharger veri noisy for e C & E class Kompressor, by comparison even Audi's CVT is not so noisy (even though CVTs are noisier den automatic transmission)

Neutral Newbie

Horsepower figures aside, SC are break cars to use in city driving conditions given the low end torque available.

Kompressor is Supercharger like what Elfenstar mentioned.

Same like turbo... Supercharge benefit is small road tax but higher power & torque [thumbsup][laugh].

Actually not really noisy for normal driving compare with cars like bm320 and swedish light turbos. Of course you cannot compare the noise with executive V6.

I think you shouldn't be comparing NA engines with a supercharged Merc engine in the first place.. nod.gif

Anyway, superchargers have no lag like turbos have, if i'm not wrong.

The M271 Kompressor is a SC engine tuned for light compression. This means excellent response from 2500rpm onwards. For those laughing at the torque falloff beyond 5000rpm is totally missing the point. The engine is designed for cruising with high torque from 2500 rpm onwards for city and light cruising.

The M271 is noisier by virtue of the SC setup. However, once inside the E200/C200, the noise is almost completely insulated and is quieter than many other luxury saloons.

Have driven the E200 and the 520, and the C200 and the 320. The M271 engine is nicer to drive compared to the I4.

As in all SC engines, there is no lag.

As for the Merc V6 series like the E230, E280 and E350, they are quieter as they're NA V6 engines.

The M271 engine does not need any additional servicing compared to NA engines, as it's a light pressure SC.

Basically, engines are designed for their purpose. My M271 E200 pulls nicely from 2500rpm, but runs out of breadth beyond 6000rpm. As for my K20A, there's not much torque below 4000rpm. Once beyond 5400rpm, it's NA VTEC heaven with huge torque and power increase all the way to redline at 8200rpm. Both are designed for different nature of driving.

so am i right to say that bmw 520's/320 petrol engine is definitely inferior as compared to all 200Kompressor engines?

i'm comparing the lowest spec petrol engine between merc and bmw.
