ford cougar... [lipsrsealed]

10 to 12 K should get you some pretty sweet cars there is a guy selling MY00 WRX for slightly above that with mods.

high mileage cars only if you are lucky...I bought high mileage cars before but both toyota, so ok. Just need to apportion a sum of $$$ for major service though. But you can never be certain with high mileage cars...it's still a gamble and resale value is very low. how high was the mileage on the one you saw?

pm me when you are back my mech might know people who want to sell their cars [flowerface]

I suggest you get as new a car as you can for 10-12k. It'll be a whole lot better (ie cheaper to run and maintain) for your use than some tired decade-old sportscar.

lol whats wrong with a ford cougar? i don't have really a very high budget anyway, preferbly a less than 10 year old car that doesn't have very high mileage, the vti-rs i saw had like 200ks some 180ks on the odo.

Gadgeter - job market has slowed due to global financial crisis, but there are still jobs available if you are not fussy. [;)]

Issac85 - I cannot describe in words how life has changed for the better since we moved here. You have to experience it for yourself. However that being said, life is how you yourself make it to be...I know of many people who are also very happy in Singapore if you know what I mean... [lipsrsealed]

Nothing wrong with a Ford Cougar in particular. 10-12k is quite a high budget for a secondhand car when you consider that for $15k you can get a brand new compact hatchback. I'm solely looking from the point of view that a new or nearly-new car will have a factory warranty for peace of mind. It would have a lot less mileage than a Ford Cougar for the same money, with parts less likely to wear out in the time that you own it.

I once owned a $3000 16 year old Toyota while studying in Australia, and it cost me $2000 to keep it running for the 1.5 years I owned it. Stuff like water pumps broke, CV joints wore out, clutch gave up, incidentals like a cracked windscreen, not to mention the usual replacing of tires, and on top of that, when you sell the car on after you are done with it, you will have to get it a roadworthy certificate, which means you'll have to spend more money rectifying the defects.

Cars like Cougar and Integra are nice, but most would have been driven enthusiastically at some point in time, and their mechanicals carry that abuse with them.

Essentially for your money you can either buy a nearly new boring car, or a interesting older car with a potential set of problems that may or may not occur. Its not so much one is right and the other choice is wrong, its just knowing what you get for each choice.

Most importantly, get to know a mechanic whom you can trust...makes life easier.

I usually buy older cars from people I know and only if I know these people have taken care of their cars. Otherwise buying from a dealer is just like going to Burswood Casino...a gamble..:)

My rough use car is a 19 year old corolla auto bought for $500, $600 major service (incl all belts, hoses, brakes, aircond, radiator flush etc) and all new interior seats later and it's running fine. This is the only car I bought "on a gamble" (found in car forums) but it was cheap and a Toyota!
